SEC Championship Game Tiebreaker

After our first half at USCe I didn't think this would be relevant for the Tigahs, but here's the SEC championship tiebreaker matrix:
"In the event of a tie between teams competing for a spot in the SEC championship game, the following procedures will be used in descending order until the tie is broken:
• A. Head-to-head competition between the tied teams.
• B. Record versus all common conference opponents among the tied teams.
• C. Record against highest (best) placed common opponent in the conference standings and proceeding through the standings among the tied teams.
• D. Cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents among the tied teams.
• E. Capped relative scoring margin versus all conference opponents among the tied teams. Formula will include a cap of 42 points scored on offense and 48 points allowed on defense.
• F. Random draw of the tied teams."

We’ve played 2 SEC games.
We could end up 7-1 or 8-0 though

I don't disagree.
I just thought the tiebreak procedure was more complicated than I imagined. I thought it would have been: head-to-head, common opponents, higher ranking, whatever REC thinks....

We just need to make sure we beat A&M and the only possible tie-breaker we’d have to worry about is LSU & UGA both being 7-1

I can imagine there are scenarios where not going to championship game may be beneficial.

I’m sure there are plenty of fans that would prefer us get a home playoff game instead of going to Atlanta, but personally I’d rather see us play for a championship

Honestly the SEC is too big now with too many good teams and probably should be split up. I think everyone would be happier if we just got rid of the big 12 guys and went back to 5 major conferences, SEC, Big 10,Big 12 and PAC 10 and ACC. 2 Super Conferences because the other 3 had years of irrelevance is short sighted and dumb.

That’s not what it’s about. There are only about 20 programs that generate the majority of the revenue in the sport. Those programs are just tired of having a substantial percentage of the revenue siphoned off to support the hangers-on.

Why cap the points?
To avoid running up the score is the only possible answer.

If we end up 10-2 (7-1 in conference)and ranked 9-10 or so, I’d rather not go to the SECCG and risk losing then be left out of the playoff.
If we finish 11-1, we are pretty much in no matter what so the risk is not there.

Isn’t it pretty much guaranteed that the loser of the sec championship game will get a playoff spot? I can’t imagine a scenario where the 2nd best sec team doesn’t make the top 11 cfp teams.
Edit: well I take it back. I can see a 3 loss SEC runner up getting left out. Would be a raw deal.

Yup. Also, as many have pointed out, a 10-3 loser of SEC Championship might get left out of playoff in favor of another 10-2 SEC team.

Yes, a national championship
Sure we’d all love to be SEC champions AND national champions.
But if playing in the SECCG can do nothing to help and only hurt our chances to be one of the 12 playoff teams, I’d rather not play in it.

You would THINK, but what if the SEC championship loser is NOT Bama and they get blown out in championship game? I think there will be four or five teams with only 1 or 2 SEC losses. Considering the automatic bids, I don't see more than four SEC schools getting in the 12.

Absolutely not
Remember there are 12 playoff spots, it it IS NOT NECESSARILY THE TOP 12 TEAMS
The major conference champions get an auto bids so an upset in a CCG could put the 14/15th ranked team in and the top ranked non power conference champ gets an auto bid. That could possible leave a top 12 team out.
Regarding the SEC. If the loser of the CCG has only 1 or 2 total losses, they are likely in no matter what. But if the losing the SECCG gives that team a third loss, they are probably out.
Yes it sucks that having to play that extra game could keep you out of the playoffs but that’s the reality.

This is my thought. The only scenario I’d see SEC Runner-up possibly missing out is if they lose the SEC CG like 42-7. Let’s not act like that team was going to compete for a championship anyways.
Let’s say a 10-2 LSU loses to Texas 28-24, then they would still deserve a CFP spot at 10-3

The real issue is going to be if there are 3 teams with the same record going after one or both spots. This happened in the NFL a few years back where the only team that had a win over one of the others in a 3 way time got the 3 seed.

You literally have no idea outside of what happened with the 4 team playoff.
What we do know is SEC & B1G will have probably have 4 teams each in the CFP, minimum. Would they leave out the #2 team for #3-5? Probably not
