Duramax 3.0 Turbo Diesel

I have a couple of friends/relatives that have a Chevy/GMC 1500 with the 3.0 Duromax and love them. I saw they are going to discontinue them after this year. Are there a bunch of problems with these? What are pros/cons besides cost of diesel and DEF? I'd love some good gas mileage while still having the power to tow something.

I don't think this is true. GM announced the end of generation 1 (LM2) and now offers the second generation (LZ0).

We are planning to purchase a full size SUV in the near future and the Suburban / yukon xl with the 3.0 duromax is on the list. I did some research and it seems to be a no brainer. I have a buddy with the LM2 engine in his truck. He pulls a twin outboard center console to grand isle and back twice a year with it. Gets great mileage when he's not towing. The LZ0 has more torque and a bit more hp.
My concern was also the DEF requirement. He said he refills the def less often than he changes the oil.

Ram 1500 diesel owner here.
DEF costs me less than $50/year.
Almost nothing.

~55k miles on my 2022 and not a single issue. I get ~29mpg on my daily commute interstate if it set cruise at 70. It tows ok not as much power at my 5.8l I had before this but the fuel mileage is awesome and it definitely tows what I need (sxs small tractor)
As of now I would buy another

Highly recommend. 2022 GMC Sierra AT4. 46,000 miles.

I have a Sierra with 17000 miles. I buy DEF from O’Reilly for $8 a jug. It takes roughly 2 jugs every 5k miles. This has been my experience so far. Diesel is marginally more expensive than the gas at most places. 30 to 50 cents a gallon usually. I spend half as much per month on fuel as I did with my last gas truck because of the exceptional fuel mileage with the 3.0. I can’t think of a single negative that I have experienced with 3.0. I haven’t heard anything about them canceling the engine. Hopefully they don’t.

I have a 2021 Sierra with the 3.0. Absolutely love that engine. Diesel with the better mileage almost always is coming out ahead cost wise than gas. Only exception was back during the $6 a gallon madness a few years ago.
DEF cost is negligible. A 2.5 gal jug is about $15 and I use about 4 gal of DEF per 5000 mile oil change.

Miss C's Escalade ESV has the Duramax, Range is unreal, has plenty enough power, rated to tow around 8k

I have a F150 Power Stroke and for me to buy DEF I find it much more convenient (and cheaper) to run by a Love's or Pilot truck stop and pump it just like diesel.

There aren’t many stations near me or that I pass on a regular basis that have DEF pumps. I’d probably get it at a pump if I did frequently pass by one. How much is it at the pump vs the 2.5 gallon jugs?

I haven't bought any in a while (my stuff fell off my truck) but last time IIRC it was about 2/3 the price and a lot less messy.
Website says it's $4.29/gallon at Pilot/Flying J and Love's is $4.28

Wait till that check engine light stays on because of an exhaust sensor. Or it starts a re-gen as you and your wife are pulling up to eat and you have to drive at highway speeds for 45 minutes while it does its thing. Or when the screen flashes and says that filter is full and you have to take it in for a forced regen….. if you buy one delete it asap.

Serious question do they make delete kits for 1/2 ton diesels. I haven’t talked to my mechanic in a while but that last time I did he told me one wasn’t available

You're right, I just looked at it again. It's the LM2 they're going to stop producing. LZ0 looks to have a bit more torque, horsepower, and towing capacity. Nice.

Are you sure? I'm not going to have that much highway mileage, as I live close to work. I'm getting 15mpg now with a V8 gas burner. I'll take 20+ but is the cost really that much difference considering it's several thousand more upfront and the diesel/DEF cost difference to gas. I just want to buy something that will last 10 years, is reliable, big enough to tow whatever I want, and not be a tank when trying to navigate the city.

I have a 2023 1500 AT4 with the 3.0. I love it.
The only negative I have found was the Def use during tow mode. I hauled a tractor to my camp 1.5 hours each way. It used a tank of def in 2 hours. Now I just run it not in tow mode and I have zero issues. If I leave it off tow mode then I use def at a normal rate. I really didn’t need the engine braking component anyway since I have trailer brakes.

But if you put glasspacks on it does it give you that vroom vroom?

I’ve been looking at getting a Sierra 1500 3.0 for a little while and I’ve done some research on it. From what I’ve found, the LM2 can be tuned and deleted. A lot of guys in Canada are doing it, but the parts are harder to get in the US. The LZ0’s are still too new to tune and delete though. It usually takes tuners a little while to crack them, especially these days.
The 2500hd L5P’s took a long time to crack. GM had them locked down so tight you had to buy a whole new ECM and have it tuned. Not sure if it’s still like that, but it was costing around $10k to tune and delete those trucks. I heard the LM2’s are around $6,500.
