They Suspend Registration Now?

So, went to the DMV to pay for my sticker for the year yesterday. Walk up to the counter thinking I am going to pay a hundred bucks or so. Lady says, Did you have insurance March of last year? I thought and that was when I had that car parked while I was saving to get the fuel pump and sender replaces. So I told her, no, I wasn't driving so I let it lapse on that one, but I have insurance on it now.
Suspended registration. Not even sure what that means, but it cost me an extra $200.

Was it cheaper to pay the fee or the insurance for that month?
Maybe you came out ahead, but a lot of folks forget you have to have insurance on all owned vehicles that are registered with the government; even if it’s sitting on cinder blocks.

Actually...now that you mention it, I probably came out about 40 bucks ahead. Good point.

Maybe i am not clear on this, but i thought that if you had a vehicle that was paid for and parked for a while- even if registered with the government - you could go without insurance on it .. or maybe you just have to have liability insurance (?)

That's what I thought. Apparently not.

Good question! The answer varies by state; Louisiana insurance companies report to the government daily, so if you go a day without insurance, big brother will know about it.
Where I live, we have the same law, but there is nothing in place to enforce the insurance mandate when we go to the DMV. Also, I believe insurance companies only reports to KY monthly (as long as it’s in force on the 1st day each month you’re gtg.)
If you own it out right, that just means you don’t have a contract requiring you to carry Comprehensive and Collision coverage on your auto insurance. Every state requires all registered vehicles to carry their states respective minimum liability limits.

Even vehicles that are stored away, or ‘up on cinder blocks’ ? if true, then i guess i learned something today.. but obvs doesn’t make a ton of sense since - while you shouldn’t let the registration lapse- if you are not driving the vehicle for a while then you cant cause an accident .

Did your insurance company access a fee also?

I believe that if it is not in use that you must surrender the plate or declare it undriveable.
Probably due to so many uninsured drivers just claiming the vehicle is not in use.

Each state has its own rules for handling such situations. In Louisiana just go to the OMV website and download a form - "Declaration of Non-Use", mail it in and it is effective as of the date of mailing. You can provide copies to your insurance agent and cancel the policy. You do have to declare the dates of non-use, so remember it if you put December 31 of that year or whenever, so that you can send another declaration if still needed.

Well that’s not true.
Some of us do, it depends on what color you are and if you are from this country and you pay your taxes. In this country, if you do things the right way, you get fricked. If you just dont give a frick then you can pretty much do what you want and you can scream racism if it doesnt go your way

Give it a rest.
We're talking about the DMV and registration.
No need to keep fighting the race war for frick's sake.

They have been suspending licenses over insurance gaps and lapses for a couple of decades now. Didn’t even notify the owners for a long time.
My $200+ experience came when I traded cars and simply failed to get old license plate turned in. If plate not turned in they claim it is an uninsured vehicle and suspend the owner automatically.
Pay the extortion or go to jail. Simply armed thugs literally no better than the inmates at the parish prison.

Fun fact: you can get comprehensive only insurance while your vehicle is laid up, and it’s like $10/month.
You turn that in with a letter from a mechanic and everything is good.
Win for all, and the most economical route.

It was only because you didn’t turn in your plate during that time with no insurance.
Either pay the insurance while it’s broke down / not in use, or pull the plate and turn it into the dmv.
The amount of people out there driving with suspensions because of this is amazing.

This is nothing new. Have to turn the plate in like others are saying.

Yeah, we didn't go over that in Coach Petersons drivers ed class in 96.

I had my car uninsured for a couple days once and had to pay that fee. Learned my lesson

I had a non running project car, that was paid for, and insurance had a deal that was even cheaper than basic liability. Said to let them know when it was on the road. Covered the states insurance requirement but didn't cover an accident. Like $10-20 a month. Basic liability was like $40. So almost free.

quote:Sdly no you can not. You have to have at least liability or turn your tag in. That led me to sell a 2nd car I had parked in the garage, never used it but wanted to keep it until I found out ...
