The governing system in EBR doesn’t work.

The article in the we BRBR newsletter this morning points out just how flawed the way our parish works.
BREC is asking for a big tax renewal even though they can’t get their audits in time. They also can’t access state and federal funding until they do.
They also are being investigated under the public meetings law and for hiring the lead guy’s cousin as CFO.
Meanwhile our DA is struggling to make ends meet. He is financed through the CP Council and he can’t hire the prosecutors he needs.
BREC just rolled forward their property taxes giving themselves a five million dollar a year hike. The DA is begging for help. The problem is our system is broken. We need crime addressed and not more splash pads or more property.
The full write up

BREC remains years behind on filing audits with the state and is on a “noncompliance list” with the state treasurer, which prohibits the organization from receiving state appropriations. The “designation of incompetence” has prevented BREC from receiving $679,000, and it’s also costing it federal funds, which are also frozen.[/The article in the we BRBR newsletter this morning points out just how flawed the way our parish works.

[quote]BREC is spending $570,000 over a four-month window on TV ads and marketing to convince voters it’s a gold medal parks department, but McCollister counters that it’s fool’s gold. In addition to the financial mismanagement, McCollister notes that BREC Superintendent Corey Wilson hired his first cousin this summer to serve as the agency’s CFO, and that the state attorney general is investigating BREC over a possible open meetings violation.
quote:
Fighting crime is a near-unanimous citizen priority in this parish. District Attorney Hillar Moore, whose budget is only $16 million, may request a new property tax in the future, saying his office needs an additional $4 million to $5 million. Ironically, BREC recently gave itself a $5 million raise with its millage rate roll-forward. McCollister says an underfunded DA’s office is more deserving of our tax dollars than a mismanaged and incompetent parks department.

The library and BREC are overfunded. Pretty much everything else is underfunded.
If you complain about the library system or BREC you get them screaming about how you hate children and how they are so great and how Baton Rouge should be so lucky to have them.

Those two got dedicated taxes to get them off the general budget so that the metro council could take the funding which had been earmarked in the budgets and spend it on other shite.

I am very glad BREC is finally being put under the microscope.

Exactly.
They should be funded based on importance.
I put police 1 and fire protection 2.
BR has a #1 fire department and BREC claims a #1 park system. Meanwhile BRPD is undermanned, poorly led, and has shown to be out of control and not able to stop all the gang violence and drug dealing.

Don't go and google how much cash the EBR Library has on hand. It'll make you sick

Both should be slashed considerably, along with the corrupt as shite COA, and CATS. There’s plenty of money that could be spent improving roads and fighting crime, but the grifters involved in all the above money pits play the race card immediately, and no one had had the seeds to do anything about it.

And remember the storm water tax. It’s next.
They are also floating a tax for a new prison and now a tax for the DA.
Our parish is hardly growing, why does BREC and the Library system keep expanding?

Basically webble beach and Santa Maria and the only 2 golf courses even worth playing in BREC.
I will give them this, the kenilworth skate park is pretty legit.
Past that, it’s pretty sad

BREC is a huge scam and wish Central would opt out.

In other words, a day that ends in "Y" in Louisiana.
Texas needs to declare its independence, then annex Louisiana to clean things up.

Hysterical. BREC is an unmitigated disaster. They need to sell half their properties.
