Not mine. I didn't do it. I'm only relaying what I am being told. And trying to help them.

A friend of mine states that a person from his company accidentally put DEF in the fuel tank of a diesel passenger van. Dealership is stating the following:

- DTC found one DTC in the PCM for water in fuel.
- Compression test performed, and cylinder # 2 had 5 % compression loss
- Cylinder # 3 had 6 % compression loss
- Engine oil has metal particles in it
- DEF in the fuel system caused the fuel to not combust, and since DEF will not compress it caused damage to the combustion chamber causing the loss of compression.
- The engine and fuel system will need to be replaced in order to resolve this issue.

The cost from the stealership? $22K for labor, parts, engine and fuel system.

Certainly this can't be. Is there a diesel mechanic shop that they should be looking at instead? The company is located in Baton Rouge.

At first glance, I agree.

I think it's a 2017 - 2018 - 2019 model year passenger van they have. I have no idea of the value, but I can't imagine it's worth a lot more than $22K, or 50 % more than the proposed price estimate to fix the issue.

i talked to a guy the other day that is doing these fixes on fedex vans, said it's happening all the time with their drivers. Said he gets right at 30k for the job, said you have to replace all the fuel lines, fuel pumps and fuel injectors as well.

5% loss isn't a big deal. They typically just replace everything in the fuel system including the lines, injectors, pumps etc. That usually runs $10-$15k. Magic sparkles in the oil is bad, may want to get an independent oil analysis and if it does have metal in the oil, a new engine is likely the best option

if it ran long enough for it to start misfiring, that engine is toast

Does this friend not carry comprehensive coverage on his vehicle? Why isn’t the insurance company handling the fuel contamination issue?

It's worth a lot more than 22K.

File an insurance claim.

It was an accident.

Doesn’t matter. Insurance pays for “stupid.” As long as it wasn’t to intentionally damage the vehicle it’s a covered loss.

I friend of mine did that last year on a Ford F250 and it cost $12,000 to repair it. And the truck only ran for a short period while he was filling it up when he realized his mistake, immediately turned it off.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a solution of urea and water that's injected into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to turn NOx gases (harmful emissions)into nitrogen and water.

Us Truckers have a separate tank to put def fluid. He messed up putting def into the diesel tank.

Fyi, metal shavings in an engine's oil is a sign of severe failure in the compression chambers of your engine. People think def is mixed with diesel when it is not. DEF fluid is released into the exhaust line to change the chemistry of the dangerous gases(to the ozone layer)into a safer emission.

That’s about what I’d expect for that work. I don’t think they’re gouging you here.

ETA: I've heard mix reviews about this place now. Apparently, this guy might be charging people for work and parts that are not done and used!!

Look elsewhere folks!
