This afternoon I was once again burned by a recipe from an Instagram reel that didn’t turn out right. I should have scrolled further into the comments to see the reviews eviscerating the recipe for not working. I don’t know if these accounts pay for reviews in their comment section or if other food content creators just post on each other’s videos to drive engagement. But once you get through the first round of comments, you’ll get the real reviews.

From my experience, social media isn’t good for recipes. Maybe they’re buying cakes from bakeries and entrees from restaurants to dress up at home. Then trying to post a recipe that sorta gets at what they purchased. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Anyways, I made a quiche recipe from the Joy of Cooking tonight and it’s nothing innovative but it’s damn good. I think I’ll stick to the classics for a while.

Anyone else find that online recipes just aren’t worth trying?

I see lots of them that just make me laugh, they are so bad.

I doubt I ever get surprised by one of them, but I have cooked for years and should know better.

Joy is great new cooks and for trying something out of your wheelhouse, like baking for me. My copy is about 20 years old, I'm now interested in seeing what the newer versions have to offer. May check it out.

It’s solid. You can learn a lot about cooking and baking in general. I don’t think any recipe has failed for me.

I always liked the Joy of cooking because it gets you to learn the basics. How to build your recipie but just follow it.

My wife makes that sometimes, but not enough. That is an awesome dish.

She told me the book had a whole chapter on omelets. I figured it would have a bunch of recipes, but it was a chapter on the technique, and what a difference it makes, if you do it right.
