Was thinking about this while watching Everybody Loves Raymond recently. Man, I just don’t know if that show works without Brad Garrett’s performance as Robert. I feel like every big laugh I got from that show came from him.

Any other side characters that fit that bill in your mind?

In regard to sitcoms, The King of Queens wouldn't have been as great of a show without Arthur Spooner. RIP Jerry

Edit: You could argue he was a main character, but oh well.

Don Knotts in Andy Griffith Show

eta- The episodes he’s not in are almost unwatchable.

If we can agree that Jack was the main character in Three’s Company, then we can agree that the show lost a lot when it changed its dynamic and its name.

WKRP doesn’t work without Johnny Fever IMHO.

Inarguably a main character and not a side character

ETA although to be fair, Brad Garrett is also definitely a main character of everyone loves Raymond

Adding Leon as a recurring character was the best decision in all of Curb.

Now we are starting to split hairs, just to split hairs.

Boyd is not "The" main character. The main character is Raylan. He could be construed as "A" main character easily, but the OP did not distinguish a group of "main characters" in his post and set them apart.

Unless otherwise specified, the OP's premise implies anyone who is not the main character is a side character by default.

Agree to disagree, there’s no way I would consider Boyd Crowder a side character. He’s completely integral to the plot, theme, and characters of the entire show, even more than Rayland in is some aspects

This is the template. Andy Griffith was smart enough to see that if he switched to being the straight man that Barney (and in a smaller part the other townsfolk) would elevate the show beyond what Griffith alone could muster.

Jerry being the least funny person on Seinfeld, Bob Newhart giving his casts full rein to be insane, it all starts with Griffith.

ETA: The opposite would be the dads on Good Times and Family Matters being pissed that the shows had to rely on J.J. and Urkel to make the shows popular.

Or when Alex Karras and his wife threw a fit that the show "Webster" revolved around a Gary Coleman knockoff instead of focusing on them. It's like, dude, you're a former football player whose only acting experience was punching a horse in Blazing Saddles and Different Strokes is the most popular show on TV. What did you think was going to happen with that show?

Without NoHo Hank, Henry Winkler's character and Fuches, Barry would have been way too dark

I always lapped up every scene big Dan Doherty was in. Street fight in the mud was legendary. Don’t think Al accomplishes half of anything without Dan as muscle
