GEISMAR — Emergency officials are responding to an explosion and fire at the Chevron REG plant in Geismar, multiple sources tell UWK.
Witnesses reported a “big explosion,” which was followed by a large fire. The plant is located off Highway 30 near Highway 73 in Geismar.
ROADS CLOSED:
Hwy. 73 at Hwy. 30
Hwy. 73 at Hwy. 75
Hwy. 30 at Industrial
The explosion occurred around 8:45 a.m., and multiple units including AirMed have responded to the scene. The number of injuries is unknown at this time, but at least one person is said to be seriously injured.
This is a developing story. As soon as more details are provided, the story will be updated. Check back for new information.
WAFB:
. GEISMAR - Two people were taken to the hospital with minor burns after a reported hydrogen gas explosion at a chemical plant.
The explosion happened at the Chevron plant on Hwy. 30 Thursday morning. Officials said no hazmat teams were called and it appeared the scene was under control with no danger to the public.
Airmed was called to transport the two victims. They had minor burns.

I heard a loud boom maybe 20 minutes ago in SBR. That couldn’t have been it, right? I thought a neighbor dropped something.

I don't recall hearing anything until the CAER alert. I'm pretty close to it too, may have mistaken a door slamming or something.
