LSU - South Carolina 1987 Gator Bowl

Remember this game well. South Carolina was a solid favorite among the media and gamblers. LSU was given very little chance of winning. SC had gotten a lot of hype kind of coming out of no where to have a big season. As near as I recall they were one of the first teams to fully embrace the run n shoot offense. They called their defense "black death". They were attacking as soon as they landed at the airport. a conservative defense for them was zero coverage and sometimes they would even rush 9 and put 2 in coverage. How no one really figured out how to beat that before Tommy Hodson and LSU is amazing. Tommy and Wendell Davis had a field day. Tommy would audible and bring the backs close to the line to pick off any blitzers and it was simple pitch and catch after that. This was the first of many times LSU made a fool out of Joe Lee Dunn and the defenses he coached at different schools. This game finished 30-13 but it was never at any point close or in doubt.

I was there, it was a lot of fun beating them!
Their fans were pretty rabid though, many cars that were in school colors.
I made a sign that said "I'd rather be a coonass than a gamecock"
Good Times

That was a beat down of a favored team. That 87 team was CLOSE. Had Hodson not been hurt during the Bama/ Gray ghost game , who knows? It just didn’t work out.

If you watch the movie Cocktail with Tom Cruise, there is a scene at a Tiki bar with that game showing on the TV in the background

Sterling Sharpe. LSU had so many great players back then. Unfortunately , they also had Mike Archer as well.

LSU (9-1-1) was the higher ranked team than South Carolina (8-3) that had lost to three of the only four ranked teams they had played that season. They had gotten some hype by upsetting Clemson late in the season, but LSU being given "little chance of winning" is BS. This is probably something created in the fog of nostalgia remembering LSU played the "disrespect" card going into the game (which didn't make much sense because LSU had the better record and was the higher ranked team.).
South Carolina was a "surprise" team, but LSU was the better team...having been ranked in the top 10 all season. It wasn't a great upset. It was the better team winning. Convincingly

It was the Georgia game from earlier that year on the TV at his Uncle's dive bar in NY. Otherwise, you're right!

Gator bowl shirt had Mike the Tiger cooking a chicken in a gumbo pot. Shirt said chicken is finger licking good. It was something like that.

I was living in Tampa and made this Bowl Game. We played extremely well. Fun times.

I, too, was there.
Our chant was, "Take your hat … your cock … and leave." Usually stated with the sweeping movement of your arm directing the Gamecock fan towards the exit.
We were pretty obnoxious. Good times.

They should have used a UGA-UF game instead.

Great game after a great season. I love how all the players look so old - Sammy Martin, Eric Andolsek, and Chris Carrier all look to be about 40.

sammy "white lightning" martin was a BEAST!
sammy always looked 45 with that bald head.

This and A&M in 1986 are the two best games of the mid 80's Arsnparger/Archer era. The earthquake game ending was awesome but it was one play after we had not scored a TD in almost 8 quarters and only prevented a 3 game losing streak.
