Monte Kiffin hasn't coached college ball since 1982

didn't hold down a steady gig in the NFL until jumping on with dungy at tampa and some great NFL talent. demoted by the vikings from DC to LB coach during one of his two stints there. even the saints DC for only one season. he's 68 years old.
i really don't see why tenn is so excited. if he tries to run the same style defense at tenn i see alot of blown coverages and assignments in their future.
maybe on top of out biding LSU O was told there would be a DC opportunity in a couple years.

I think Lou Tepper could have won big with those players
Sapp
Rice
Brooks
Barber
Lynch
Dwight Smith
Hardy Nickerson
Shelton Quarles

Are you kidding me? Not excited? When you have a defense called the "Tampa Cover 2", a defense specifically made by Kiffen that everyone uses now, you know you have something special. He'll give a modern blueprint on how to stop the spread...at least that is some good news.
Monte is a genius DC and anyone who tries to discredit what hes done, is a fricking idiot, period.

you are the fricking idiot. dungy gets the credit for the tampa 2. all monte did was coach under him.
i guess steele and muschamp should get credit for saban's defense?

and i have my doubts about the tampa 2 working in college. first of all, you have to have the exact right personnel. second, if not executed nearly perfectly, you wont be able to stop shite.

I'm not an NFL guy, but as I understand it they don't usually see a lot of college-style spread offenses up there. Seems like it would be a different beast which he may or may not have a knack for figuring out.

it should be interesting to see how the tampa two will do against the spread option.

i'm still waiting to see the recruiting plan that would net them the DEs necessary to run the tampa 2
MLBs also

when did all of this shite start?
there is an argument that he may not be in the top 5 in the NFL right now
dick lebeau
bill B
wade phillips
jim johnson
spagnulo
tony dungy (created the system monte uses)

Well, all time is silly since you throw in guys like Landry and Phil Bengston.
Still,he's done a fine job at Tampa regardless of who's system he is running with.
I think its a nice story that he wants to coach with his son,but Tennessee football isn't some quaint D2 school out in the country. They're ready to win and win now.Daddy working for his boy just seems to be inviting problems.Commingling these NFL guys into college sounds good on paper, but making it work or two different things.

We will see if this Defense works with college guys. You need athletes to run it but I am sure he is good enough to make adjustments for the college game.

Kiffin modified the Cover 2 scheme to the Tampa 2 and hes been running with it for years now. Its a Cover 2 but its a modified Cover 2. At least I'm pretty sure Kiffin modified his scheme. Dungy hasn't been in Tampa how many years? You can't discredit what hes done since then. Hes easily one of the best DCs in the NFL.

UT fans have dreams of this being a seamless transition. Monte gets the D going and then will hand things to Big Ed in about 2 or 3 years. Don't worry about having the proper personnel in place or anything its MONTE KIFFIN. Ed will then learn everything there is to know about the tampa 2 and help continue this defensive dynasty. This doesn't have disaster written all over it or anything at all.

it's a cover 2/3, or i like to call it the tampa 2.5
it's a cover 2 sometimes, and it's a cover 3 sometimes
the MLB decides on every given play whether to stay at home (cover 2) or drop back into the deep middle (cover 3)
the MLB is crucial to this defense. the bucs had a rough go after hardy nickerson left. then they got shelton quarles who was great in the role. then they've had a rough transition. colts didn't take the next step until brackett proved it. great
WLBs are also generally necessary, but more easily replaced. they just need to be smart enough to cover the middle if the MLB drops back and fast enough to play WLB. but you can find these guys in College.
also pressure by the front 4 is absolutely necessary b/c all 7 of the back 7 must be in pass D. great DEs are needed accordingly. THIS is the area that i just don't see UTenn getting the players. these guys are rare...in the NFL

when you have dewayne white and cliff avril as your DEs, the tampa 2 becomes the detroit lions

Not exactly ideal for college ball since guys are in and out in a matter of years

Didn't bill walsh, the offensive genius, coach at stanford after he left the 49ers? I believe he brought in a all n.f.l. staff that coached or played in the n.f.l. I also believe this lasted about 2 years.
College ball is a lot about talent/recruiting first, emotion, second, then x's and O's third.
Not saying x's and O's doesn't matter, just saying if you got a talented fired up team, then that trumps x's and o's without the talent.
