eBay for clubs

It’s seems the bids come in late.
I sort of quit bc I was thinking it was somebody trying to jack price up.
How do they keep that from happening ?
I assume you can’t bid on your on products, but what controls do they have for bid only accounts?

Sniping. Very common practice on eBay. Don't give anyone else a chance to place a winning bid. Honestly, there is no sense on bidding on an item prior to the 10-15 seconds unless its at a time where you can't be looking at the auction...all it does is raise the prices. You have to wait until the last 10 seconds (or later) to place a bid that you are comfortable with.
They have (or used to at least) have sniping apps/add-ons that would place a bid at the last second for you. Sellers can certainly have another account or have a friend bid to raise the price too but they could always just put the reserve price in or have the opening bid be the lowest they would accept.

You also have auto increase, so it very well can continue to go up. I honestly have just moved to buy it now or best offer and don’t even place bids anymore. Also, golf wrx has a great classifieds that is normally cheaper than eBay. You lose some protection, but I’ve bought probably 8 clubs off of there without issue.

put your max bid and it will auto bid for you

A couple of times I got outbid only to have the seller contact me about taking my last offer. I declined because if felt like someone was bidding against me only to get a better price. I also do the "buy it now".

Just bought a putter on ebay. Did a "make an offer" that was a low but reasonable offer and got accepted. So many of hte items up for bid get tons of last second bids. Several items in my watch list the seller emailed me asking if i wanted to buy at a reduced price (after I'd already purchased another). Seems like half of everything on there is a scam.

Do it with about 8 seconds left on the auction for best results. This is how I beat the snipers.

Yep. Don't wait till the last second to up your bid. Like you say, 5-10 seconds left, put your max bid and let eBay do the work for you. Or do it early on but you potentially run the price up higher by running the bid up early. Still can work out sometimes though.
I buy on eBay a lot, just never golf clubs. Bought a $800 set 8-9 years ago, played with them for a year and they were the most inconsistent/unpredictable irons ever. Went to trade them in and was told they were fake. Bought them from a seller with over 10k sales in golf equipment. Fool me once.

Do NOT buy clubs off eBay. Besides the fakes that are out there, you never know if you are getting a club that’s had its length, lie, etc messed with. Most people selling them don’t know if they’ve been altered.
Always go with 2nd swing. Prices just as good if not better and can return within 30 days if you don’t like it.
