shot a ring neck (eurasian collard) for the first time today. popped him in WF Parish. kinda pumped as it’s my first one and bigger than traditional mourning doves

Got my first one yesterday too. Still haven't seen any white wings in a field even though I am feeding about a dozen in my yard.

Nice! I see them all the time in town but have never shot one.

got lots of ring necks in south Texas and they are considered non native , open season.

We used to shoot them a lot at Fourchon at the point on LaButte. The boat houses hold a bunch of them. The point was on their flyway to the beach.

Killed a few yesterday. Never saw them until about 15 years ago and they showed up everywhere. Back then they were bonus birds and didn't count in your limit. We whacked the shite out of them for several years then they kinda moved on. We dont near as many nowadays, but still pick up a few.

Ring necked and Eurasian Collared doves are two separate species, but look similar. I don’t believe there is a limit on either bird.

They are included in your 15 bird bag limit now days, but they used to not be. It was a lot cooler when you could kill 15 mourning doves plus a pile of ring necks.

Damned things are thick as fleas in New Mexico and are impacting the mourning and white wing populations because apparently they are very amorous and will breed with anything that will stand for it. Nice bonus bird, good as any dove and bigger. Not the best flyers, about like white wings. We could shoot them in parks in New Mexico with air rifles legally. They are thick in New Mexico. I shot them year round in my back yard with a pellet rifle and shot piles of them....never made a dent in their numbers. Had my lab on them at 6 weeks - nothing like a near pigeon sized bird flopping around on the ground to make a dog birdy....

They were flying over us in huge flocks Sat afternoon. Think I was on 8 or 9 before I killed a mourning dove.

“ They are included in your 15 bird bag limit now days”
Quote from 2024-2025 La. Hunting Regulations ; There is no bag limit on Eurasian collared doves or ringed turtle doves provided that a fully feathered wing and head remain attached to the carcass of the bird.Fully dressed Eurasian collared doves and ring necked doves( those without a fully feathered wing and head remain attached to the carcass) shall be included in the daily bag limit for doves.
It pays to read the regulations before going hunting.

Usually get one or two every season over here in Texas, shot one this past Saturday in fact.
I always think they’re a big a white wing when they’re flying. Doesn’t count toward your limit over here in Texas.

I'll be damned. I was told by a certified dove hunting nazi that they included them in the bag limit now. And the pamphlet reads:
quote:
Daily Bag Limit Possession Limit
Dove (Mourning, White-winged, Fully Dressed Eurasian, and Collard Doves) North Zone:
15 in aggregate 45 in aggregate
I guess I glossed over the fully dressed part. This is great news

So you can leave a wing attached to the breast? It seems like that used to be a thing in Texas with white wings but I could be wrong.

Yea, apparently if you don't fully clean the ring necks, and green jeans can differentiate between them and mourning/white wings, you can stack them up like cordwood.
