Denver Nuggets star Jamal Murray has agreed on a four-year, $208 million maximum contract extension, his agents Jeff Schwartz and Mike George tell ESPN. The deal — guaranteeing Murray $244M over next five seasons — secures a franchise cornerstone to the Western contender.

Part of me feels like it's an overpay but I don't think Denver really had a choice here. Going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

eta: well i guess letting him walk is always an option..

They literally have no choice. They have to pay players a certain % of revenue, and these max salaries are based off that revenue

Pistons had to give Tobias Harris’ rotting corpse a 2-year, 52 million dollar deal just to meet the minimum spending for the salary cap.

It is not balanced though. The revenue is not spread evenly throughout the league. So you have teams, like the Wolves and Grizzlies, that make well under 300M/year. Then teams like the Lakers and Knicks that are way over 500M/year. Why should salaries be the same for both?

The hell are you talking about? They are in win now mode. They can't replace the production of Murray if they let him walk so the only choice is to pay him.

Not sure why Denver didn't try for a discount. How many other teams would offer him a max when his current contract ends?

Yup. Given the tv ratings, either the NBA is massively overvalued or the WNBA is currently massively overvalued.

Most reasonable people know the answer.

I'm discussing what the CBA is, not some fantasy about what it should be

The salary cap, max salaries, MLEs, etc. are all essentially based on league revenue.

The market literally just signaled what the NBA is worth.

quote:

That means that Disney (ABC and ESPN), Comcast (NBA and Peacock) and Amazon will be airing all of the NBA's nationally televised games from the 2025-26 season through the 2035-36 season -- an 11-year agreement that will net the NBA roughly $76 billion dollars.

Hopefully Murray isn't washed already at 27. He's looked horrible for about 6 months now. Guy looked terrible in the Olympics and managed to get locked up by Austin Reaves in the playoffs.

Literally everyone in sports media agrees it’s a massive overpay. Their ratings don’t necessitate contracts that high. Don’t believe me? Look at NBA regular season ratings compared to WNBA ratings. Look at what the WNBA just got paid.

The NBA is massively overvalued. These networks bid against themselves.
