One dead, multiple injured after house explodes in Ragley

quote:

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s (SFM) Office is currently investigating a house explosion that took place this morning that left one person dead and multiple injured.

SFM Public Affairs Director Ashley Rodrigue says Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies are at the scene now assisting firefighters from Beauregard Fire District No. 2.

The residential explosion took place just before 10 a.m. in the 1100 block of Pullin Road.

“Firefighters arrived to find a large debris field, fire, and several injured survivors,” said Rodrigue.

7NEWS has a crew near the scene now while it is secured for safety. Once we are able to access the scene, we are told we will have more information from the state fire marshal’s office.

More on this story as it develops.

Apparently, it was a propane leak. If this was the builder's fault due to negligence, what could they be looking at outside of any civil suits? What about the code inspectors? Any liability for them and the Parish?

The people started moving in last weekend and spent their first night in the house last night. Wonder if they just ignored the rotten egg smell or if it happened too fast.

FM investigators have confirmed seven people were in this home at the time of the explosion.

A 16-year-old did not survive. Five victims were hospitalized in various stages of injury. The final survivor, a toddler, is being cared for by relatives.

"This is an unimaginable tragedy for this family and community," said State Fire Marshal Chief Bryan J Adams, "This investigation is still very much active, but we have a top-notch team working diligently to get as many answers for this family as possible."

My uncle lives on Pullin Rd and I am getting second hand info from my mom about it but she had no idea who was killed. If what you say is true then I guess the owner did smell it.

I wonder who built the house. I think WH just bought a lot of land back there and he made a new subdivision but I don't think any houses were built in it yet.

You’re supposed to pressure test all the gas piping in the house to pass inspection. I wonder what happened?

Yep. Just went through that on a rental house I bought and remodeled.

You test during top out and normally leave the gauge pumped up overnight for the inspector the next day. If it still read pressure, the plumber likely kept the gauge on the pipe until fixtures (water heater, stovetop, clothes drier, fireplace) so maybe something happened to one of the pipes after inspection or one of the connections to the fixtures was only hand tight and not tested with soap and water.

I’m a plumber in the area and would really like to know how this happened?

The builder, plumber, and propane supplier will all be named in the lawsuit.

Certain conditions require a propane gas system verification by means of a pressure test and/or a leak test according to NPGA, FNPA and FNGC guidelines. A pressure/leak test is required for:

New system or new customer
Occupancy change
Interruption of service (repairs, new equipment, gas shut off, etc.)
After a tank runs completely empty (“Out of Gas” situations)
Suspected Leaks
Disconnect and Lock Out due to unpaid account balance

The propane supplier's liability ends at the tank IMO

Not sure how they should be liable if the leak was at the fireplace. Any piping beyond their tank is not their responsibility but yes they will be named because that's how lawyers operate

could have been an appliance. We had a recall on our stove when it was new because of issues involving the burner and potential gas leaking into the house

Not sure what happened, but is possible that piping was all good and a fitting in the actual gas log insert was leaking. Several possibilities.
