I was at LSU at the time. Saw the influx of people. Population went from like 250k to 500k quick fast.

What I never really considered until recently is how devastating the loss of property was to families. Losing their cherished memories, photos, stuff like that.

I can't imagine it.

But if any state can keep in good spirits, it's the good folks in La.

Although I lost nearly every possession I owned, Katrina was a blessing.

i made a few decisions that i thought were poor/emotional decisions back then. the decision to move away from my hometown is probably at the top of the list.

i still regret having to make the decision but, it actually worked out for me.

Katrina was a very mean bitch. But Ida personally affected me way more…. Having a tree fall through your home while you are in it is very scary…

I remember the 10 year anniversary of this and all the news surrounding it pissed me off. The entire narrative was that it was a federal failure and all about race.

For us and our area I think post-Ida was much less bad because of the lessons learned from Katrina, both on a personal level and also local/state govt.
Katrina was such a dick punch.

Over the past few days I've been watching this playlist of coverage from The Weather Channel. It really highlights the realization that set in as Katrina began to shift course, and the coverage from Sunday morning when the sun came up on that monster is still sobering. It is hard to watch.

YouTube chronological playlist of TWC Katrina coverage

What separated Jay Grymes here in Baton Rouge, he was the first to say folks this storm has to come more west bc of that high that built in for a little while to it's east

I had a late lunch with clients on Friday at Mr Bs and skipped out of the rest of the workday completely oblivious…no idea we were in danger. By Saturday night I was evacuating and didn’t get home again for almost a month.

but all things considered despite the damage Katrina was the change in my life I needed. frick Ida though all that did was cost me money and trees

I lived in Lakeview during Katrina.

Kenner during Ida.

My divorce was also finalized August 29, 2013.

I’ve lost a lot of my stuff on this day in history.

Had a huge tree fall right through my house during Laura. Thank God me and the family were on vacation at the time.

Yeah. Katrina was a monster storm. The GOM was a powder keg that summer. There were two more major hurricanes after Katrina.
