This is a horrible format.
I do wonder if international soccer is going to lose some of its popularity with the selfish tinkering of the organizers.
I’m not saying it’s going to be anything like NASCAR because there is such a considerable built-in edge, but I do wonder if this will moderately hurt ratings for the group stages.

So if you arent a top 8 team you have another 2 leg playoff round to get into the knockout rounds?
Seems a bit bunk. The 9th place team will have to play as many games as the 24th placed team but more games than the 8th placed team.

You play those 8 games and everyone gets seeded 1-36 after that.
quote:
The 36 clubs will be ranked together in the one league, with the top eight all progressing to the last 16 and the format of the competition from that point on remaining the same.
However, it will be seeded, taking into account positions in the league phase.
In addition, a play-off round will be introduced, with the teams finishing from 9th to 24th in the league phase going through to a two-legged knock-out tie to decide the remaining spots in the last 16. These play-off ties will be seeded.
The bottom 12 teams in the league phase will be eliminated, with no access to the second-tier Europa League, as was the case in the past.

The only reason I do is because I played football manager for a few months and it was on there when you got to the 24-25 season.
36 teams are drawn into 4 pots (9 teams each). Every team plays 2 teams from each pot, 4 home games 4 road games.
It is one big table.
Top 8 in points move on to the round of 16.
9-24 play a "knockout round"
25-36 are eliminated.

10 games instead of 6, before the knockout rounds.
It’s pathetic. Just keep running players into the ground to just a few more dollars, all while diluting the product.
I hope the European teams send youth squads to the club world championship

Immediately, no. Mid term, likely.
Long term, definitely.

I still think 5 subs in league play for a power vs a minnow is bullshite but we’re on a trajectory where clubs in European play will need 7 and even more rotation. We’ve all but destroyed Cup competitions with the congestion, league play is next
Top 8 is a really high bar for this format too. Most teams won’t be locking their R16 bids until after matchday 7 or 8, so the days of a clinched team in the group stage rolling out young lineups for matchday 5 and 6 (invaluable experience vs other clubs desperate to advance) are over
A first-choice player’s path to the round of 16 is potentially expanding from 4 matches to 10, and those extra 6 will be among the best competition they play all season. It’s lunacy

Okay, so you play two teams from Pot 1, two from Pot 2, and four random teams? Is that how this is set up, and then there is seeding afterward?
