My son showed interest in it, and I want to encourage him but at the same time know what I’m getting in to.

Do your boys like it? How involved are you?

Local den/pack has women leaders, and they have boys of their own. Is this common these days? I was in cub scouts 30 years ago and men were leaders then. Dads are still involved at the den level, and dads are also leaders at the pack level.

ETA yes I’m aware of what’s been going on in Boy Scouts and allowing girls (now Scouts BSA as a result).

Find out who the leaders are and be involved is the only answer. Gone are the days of dumping your kids with the Scout leader for a little kid free time. Now you have to be involved to make sure they aren't getting molested and / or being taught by some freak that is filling their heads with Progressive ideas. That being said, get them with a bawtastic Leader that can teach them some life and survival skills and your kids will thank you.

You wouldn't believe the number of adults that can't start a campfire and determine North. It's sad really.

While this is true, the experience can still be great if you have good (normal men) running your pack.

Even back in the late 1970’s, I had a mom as a den leader, and it was terrible. She had us doing crafts inside every meeting while the other dens were doing cool stuff with their dads.

My boys love it. We also have a cub master who is phenomenal when it comes to thinking of activities with the kids. He isn’t as good with coordination/communication with parents so that is where I have stepped up lately.

Like someone else said, get involved and be apart of the experience with them. Scouts is one of those things that you get out of it what you put in.

Give your pack a try, if you don’t like how they operate, you can always try a different pack.

What city are you in?

Our pack is a pretty good time. No girls in the pack. Moms may do a few administrative things but all den leaders and pack leaders are men.

Don't be one of those parents who treat Boy Scouts as a baby sitting service. Be involved, help out, and lead.

There is a spinoff called explorers, and essentially all you do is go camping and cool shite you don’t have to frick with merit badges and all these stupid weekly meetings

Is your son interested in the merit badges and all the cool activities or is he just into the outdoors and going camping? Maybe that will help him influence which direction you go

My son just got his Eagle.

Cub scouts is a low buy in. You’ll need to be at most overnight camp outs. If he likes it and has a good patrol and wants to do Boy Scouts I would recommend it. The “woke” stuff isn’t like people say. There are a couple of badges that are eye rolling but overall it’s a great experience.

If he makes it far enough and you have a chance to go to Philmont definitely do it. 70 mile backpacking hike with your kid while he leads is absolutely priceless.

ETA - I personally don’t mind that they allow girls to have the experience. They have separate troops so there is barely any overlap. If it were a truly mixed co-Ed experience id have a different opinion.

Our troop is stellar and scouts are a fixture in the woodlands. It’s all driven at the troop level.

Sons enjoyed it. Became a weekend hassle. The leaders wanted to do something just about every weekend

We really enjoyed it at first starting with cub scouts. After around 4 years I saw it resorting to a non stop money grab and I felt like the primary goal went from giving the kids essential skills that they may not be otherwise exposed to, just doing things for money to keep the company afloat. I don’t regret pulling my son out of it. Especially when he didn’t enjoy it anymore.

Had a kid in Cub Scouts. The parents were weird and so were the kids. Usually a little poorer than most. We didn't stay with it very long. Plus overnight camping trips on football Saturdays and you were allowed electronic devices in your tent. Screw that nonsense.

It’s 100% dependent on the adult leaders. If you have normal dads leading them, it’s great. Unfortunately, there’s many dork loser dads and even moms leading many of them now.

It’s really dependent on your local leaders. It takes a lot of dedicated time from them to make it worth it. As others said, you as a parent have to be involved.
