Mac Markway transferring to Nebraska

Per On3 and Markway's Twitter
Said he will start practice in the next couple days.
I thought he transferred after the deadline and would not be able to participate for any team this season.
Could care less about Nebraska getting him but would love if anyone had some clarity on the transfer rule.

Smart move with that qb they’ve got. He will do well there.

How much less could you care?

That’s only applies to inside the conference
Also the courts made it very hard for the NCAA to restrict any players eligiblilty based on a transfer so just assume that anyone can transfer at any point and you won’t be wrong often

What was his reason for leaving lsu anyway?

I think he saw the writing on the wall with the way Pimpton and Green were performing in camp

The transfer portal applies to the entire NCAA. From what I've read, the only way Markway can play this season is if he is a walk-on this year.

Maybe he can practice with the team, but not play. Also, I think maybe he can be a walk-on.

Good coach that uses TEs, extremely talented young QB.
Pretty solid landing spot for him.

He was going to get significant playing time on runnings plays, but likely very few touches.

That’s not entirely accurate. There is no transfer deadline for the NCAA but there are deadlines to enter the transfer portal. The next portal window doesn’t open until December.
It’s a recruiting violation for any other staff to have contact with him (outside of a chance encounter / small talk) before he is officially in the transfer portal. So I’m very curious how he can start practice without being in the portal. Maybe LSU granted him some sort of waiver or release.

Here is the relevant language in the NCAA D1 manual (mostly copied & pasted from a previous post of mine on this topic):
quote:
13.1.1.3 Four-Year College Prospective Student-Athletes. An athletics staff member or other representative of the institution's athletics interests shall not communicate or make contact with the student-athlete of another NCAA Division I institution, or any individual associated with the student-athlete (e.g., family member scholastic or nonscholastic coach, advisor), directly or indirectly, without first obtaining authorization through the notification of transfer process.
The “notification of transfer process” is the transfer portal. So he can’t have any communication with another D1 staff until the portal opens.
quote:
13.1.1.3.4 Student-Athlete Withdrawn From Four-Year College. An institution may contact a student- athlete who has withdrawn officially from a four-year collegiate institution without obtaining authorization through the notification of transfer process only if at least one academic year has elapsed since the withdrawal. (Revised: 8/8/18 effective 10/15/18)
Even if he officially withdrew from LSU, he can’t have contact with another staff until either A) a full academic year has passed or B) he enters the portal.
I think LSU might be able to process him in the portal outside of the official windows at LSU’s discretion. The D1 manual doesn’t technically say that the process can’t be initiated outside the windows - it just says the only time a school has to process it is during those windows. So maybe LSU took the high road here but I don’t know why you would set that precedent.
Also, “contact” in this context is the recruiting definition. It’s a long definition, but in essence it’s any face-to-face encounter that amounts to more than a brief greeting, regardless of whether initiated by the staff or the player. It would be impossible to have a player on the team, walk on or otherwise, without making contact with them.

Damn he was pretty good in the EA video game. Saved me on a few key 3rd downs.
