The Astros games have been blacked out in Lafayette for a few years at least on fs1. I notice today they are playing the stros Phillies game. I realize they are in Philly but I haven’t seen any astros games this year. Did s’the blackout policy change

Alright so does this mean that fs1 has the Phillies and I wont start catching astros games?

Fwiw I also have the mlb tv package and they are unusually blacked on that also.

This is a nationally televised game on FS1. This isn’t the Space City Home Network regional broadcast which is subject to blackouts.

It was hard to keep up over the years. Root Sports, AT&T Sports Network and now Space City They've all been on FUBO since it's inception, FYI.

Sometimes, I think MLB consults a Magic 8 ball and flips a coin before deciding whether to black out a broadcast on a national TV outlet. Their blackout policy is antiquated, illogical and nonsensical. In other words, a perfect reflection of the commissioner’s office, the owners and the players union.

I'll admit, that tripped me up for a minute last night wondering why Space City had some nonsense on instead of the Astros.

Interesting. It's on both FS1 and Space City tonight, with the regular local broadcast crew on Space City.

Per the MLB/Astros websites it’s only airing on TBS for out-of-market. In-market will have to be viewed on SCHN.

Ha, it has been a mess. Fortunately it’s all been the same channel, it just keeps getting bought out and given a name change.

the MLB blackout policy hasn't changed in years.

there are a select few games each year that are not blacked out on the national stream. but the vast majority of games that are played on both a National Feed and a "local regional" network, the local market is blacked out of the national feed.

There are legit gripes about the MLB blackout policy - but for the Astros in this area specifically, it is not difficult at all and not really all that expensive relatively speaking to watch the Astros here if you like. Get FUBO or Youtube TV and watch all the Astros you want.

Just as a correction, SCHN isn’t on Youtube TV. Only available on Fubo, DirecTV/DirecTV Stream and U-Verse

MLB: we need to grow the game and appeal to larger groups of fans

Also MLB:

It is so antiquated and makes zero sense for the consumer in 2024.

It made sense for teams and leagues when they would blackout games until a certain % of tickets were sold. It made sense for teams and leagues when existing regional sports networks (and RSNs that were created explicitly for the purpose of) paid the teams un-godly amounts of $$ for exclusive distribution rights and partnered with cable/satellite providers. The TV consumption model has changed drastically since these blackouts rules were set in place.

Here's a thought: I'm an Astros fan but I am also a huge baseball fan in general. I pay for and use MLB.tv every day of the season to watch whatever out of market game(s) I want. I also pay for Express VPN and have it installed on all of my devices to get around the blackout so I can watch the Astros broadcasts on SCHN. RSNs charge cable/satellite providers a fee to carry the channel. Why can't RSNs charge MLB that fee...and then MLB charge me, the consumer, that fee for the ability to stream in market? I don't even care if MLB wants to charge a pass-through fee. In this scenario everyone is happy/satisfied. Assuming the in-market fee as an add-on is reasonable, I would gladly pay it just so I wouldn't have to mess with the VPN every time I want to watch the Astros.

frick the blackouts!
