Anybody remember Otto Warmbier being detained in North Korea?

I had completely forgotten about that story, but stumbled upon a YouTube video summarizing the incident. I’m not convinced he took the poster, but just going to the NK as a tourist is playing with fire. The creepiest thing to me is how his teeth seemed forcefully rearranged.

Yeah the guy was definitely made an example sadly. But that’s a reason why NK should be avoided. You couldn’t pay me enough money to enter that hell hole

Yeah. I'll give him some slack because he was a young guy. Once you're over a certain age and your brain is fully developed, you should probably avoid going to North Korea.

Apparently when he returned to the US, he was in a coma, had obviously experienced head trauma, had bruises all over his feet, and apparently his teeth were all screwed up, like someone took pliers to them.

Like they took his teeth out and put them back in the wrong slots?

He was a young stupid kid who didn’t respect the rules when visiting NK.

The idea that he was purposely selected to be convicted as a political statement is horseshite. The DPRK would do this to anyone regardless of nationality. All of his friends who visited with him came back to the US unscathed.

My understanding is that he had straight teeth, and they were made to be crooked and misaligned.

I went to NK about a year before all this went down. Easily the most boring place I have ever been to and ive traveled to dozens of countries. im not convinced he took the poster by any means, but its easy to imagine some bored /drunk young people getting up to mischief there and not realizing how dangerous that game is. Seriously tho, during the days its just lame tours and then at night the only thing to do is get drunk at the hotel bar.

Why would you even go there? I've never thought to myself, hey let's go play golf in Afghanistan.

I just read the Wiki about the incident and there wasn't a single mention of this happening; in fact, the exact opposite was mentioned several times of how excellent condition (with the exception of the brain injury of course) the body was in.

There are articles out there where his dentist claims that his bottom 4 teeth were bent inward towards the tongue.

I traveled to East Berlin as a civilian before the wall came down. There was definitely a kind of rush because you knew you were doing something “bad” in a way…hard to describe.

After that, I wanted to go to other similar destinations. I was working in Europe and planned a return trip through some Caribbean island where you could take a small plane to Cuba and they wouldn’t stamp your passport. My manager saw the itinerary and suspected what I was doing and didn’t approve the trip.

The other place I wanted to go was Vietnam, which is now not a big deal. But I never had a desire to go to North Korea.

Outside of the Gaza strip I can't imagine a worse place to voluntarily "visit"

You'd have to be insane to go there.

Yeah there's thrill seeking and also "my nuts might get roasted over open flames" type of places. I'm good with dying and never seeing these places
