I’ll start…

The closest country to everywhere in the US:

The US east coastline and west coastline of Australia match almost perfectly:

The word “soda” has been slowly taking over as the description of soft drinks:

The Lincoln Memorial was completed before the reflecting pool:

Incomplete tower of the Manhattan Bridge vs. today:

Boston, before and after moving the freeway underground:

The Chicago skyline as seen from the Indiana Dunes National Park nearly 50mi across Lake Michigan:

Arizona firefighters helping to tame a fire across the US/Mexico border:

Boston moving the freeway underground is really cool. Crazy that can be done.

Soda is taking over because all those in California fleeing what they voted for are moving to the South.

Despite the ~60 mile distance, you are able to see Chicago from Southwest Michigan thanks to atmospheric refraction, the cold air from Lake Michigan and warm air mix causing light rays to bend.

That's cool

Nope. Flat.

It also has nothing at all to do with differences in elevation.

Oregon and Florida have only 1 hour difference in time.

At least some of it is.

It struck me as sort of a massive waste of money (how many billions did it ultimately cost?), for a mostly useless and not even really that attractive strip of greenspace. I mean, I guess it looks better than the freeway, but I just remember seeing it in person and thinking, 'Wait, y'all spent a few years worth of your whole city budget for THIS?'

everyone has those little quirky things that make them irrationally angry, and the "coke" thing is by far one of mine. I can't tell you how many times in my life I've heard a joke, or seen a meme, or heard some passed down story abotu "heh...in the south, everything is a coke! You go to a restaruant and you order a coke, then they ask what kind!"

frickING bullshite. This isn't the got damn 1920s. I've lived in the heart of the deep south my entire life and I have never, ever, EVER once heard anyone order a coke unless they actually wanted a red-labeled coca cola classic. Even when I was very young and would go out with my family, my old grandparents, who would've been born in the 19-teens, never did that. It's just one of thsoe things that keeps getting repeated so often enough that people actually believe it.

I've definitely found this to be true in the context of ordering one, but people definitely say they're going to the Coke machine or that they're going to grab a Coke only to come back with something different.

Yeah that's probably true, but even this is declining. And in real life it's my wife going "hey will you get me a coke or something" and I get her a Dr. Pepper.

Not the mythical Southern "I'll have a coke sir" "Ok son what kind" "Mr. Pibb"

That's the dumb stuff that I've always heard claimed and never once heard in practice.

It's a very misunderstood thing. In my experience, every soft drink machine is just a "Coke machine." Similarly, I've been in situations where you will pull up to a convenience store and someone will say "I'm gonna go get a Coke" and might walk out with something NOT a Coke. However, like you say, I've never once heard anyone order a Coke and a waitress say "What kind" unless it's the difference between say a Diet Coke and Coke.

In other words, it can be used as a generic descriptor for soft drinks (sodas, pops) in SOME settings, but it's certainly never such for all settings.

oh yes and that's no issue, that's more so done for brevity or convenience more than anything. Knida like Q-tip or Kleenex are actual brand names instead of the actual product itself but it's just part of the lexicon so it's what we say.

But I'm specifically talking about the tired old trope about ordering coke in a restaurant because all soft drinks are cokes, then having to specify which kind you actually want. That is what gets my goat big time.

Always called soft drinks "coke" except orange soda.
