Have yet to hear a bad thing about these things. But if you have any thoughts to share please do. Noticed they are much lower price than equivalent pathfinder or blue wave offerings.

Here's what I want to know. Says draft is 12. From experience, how well does the boat do in shallow water? It seem light but I noticed the dead rise changes aggressively from the stern to the bow.

If I'm running open bodies like Borgne and also getting in the marsh shallows how well suited is the 224? Should I just stick to my skiff or is this the right balance?

Looking for something that can handle open water on windy 15-20 knot days without getting absolutely soaked.

Tia

Not sure about the 224 but I fished out of a 25 ft blackjack during a charter weekend and that boat was impressive. We went in big water by the rigs and little water in the marshes. Handled both beautifully.

224 is a great boat, but it's still a 23' boat. If you're out in 20 knots, you're going to have a bad time.

The 224 is a really fun boat to run around the marsh in. It's fast and turns like a go kart. It is not a skiff though and I'd highly doubt it's going to effectively fish a foot of water when fully loaded. It's gonna be a hell of a lot better suited for crossing Lake Borgne than a skiff will though.

If it were me and I were selling my skiff to upgrade, I'd get the 256. My only real gripe about the 224 is the three level bow layout.

It's the best all-purpose boat on the market for a guy who fishes south of I-10.

Good friend of mine has one. There aren't many 22' ones around. Handles open water as well as you can expect from a bay boat and handles shallow water as well as you can expect from a bay boat. We've fished snapper and marsh redfish the same day out of his a few times.

I dont think there's an open cabin boat built that can run lake bourgne on a 20 knot on the beam day and be dry. You'd probably get wet in a 34 foot yellowfin that day. I think blackjacks bow and Keel design are as good as you're going to get. It's a very dry riding boat for what it is. Lots of flare, lots of rise, long keel, and a hard wide chine that carries all the way to the bow eye.

All great info, thank you.

Totally agree in 20kt days you're getting tossed around. I'm coming from an 18ft skiff so a 23 foot boat is an upgrade.

The key concern is whether I will regret losing the shallow capability from the skiff in exchange for the 224's open water capabilities and general "all-purpose" nature.

This helps a ton. Appreciate the replies and welcome any others.

No, you won't, at least when it comes to fishing. I catch limits of reds from a 24' kenner every year. You don't need to go mud riding to catch fish anywhere in louisiana

What kind of skiff? If you stay inside the marsh and you like to redfish primarily, keep the skiff. If you like to cross Borgne and want a lot more possibility, get the 224. Not to be cliche, but there's no do-it-all boat. Everything is a trade off.

pretty good balance boat for that. Can get shallow or go offshore depending on weather.

Tell J.C. to quit playing so much golf and get to work.

Great trout boat, if it’s too rough for the 22’ blackjack the trout aren’t biting anyway. It can get pretty shallow so fishing the duck ponds is doable, maybe not on low tide however. My biggest gripe with the boat is access to the bilge pump is impossible. They install that sucker before putting the cap on.

Boats are like women. It's hard to find one that does everything!

I’ve had similae thoughts on the blackjack 226. They are beautiful boats, look to be very well laid out and efficient for south la inshore and light offshore fishing.

While the 256 is obviously superior, I’ve been seeing used 226’s that are very well equipped and very well kept in the mis to high 40-50k range which seems to be “reasonable” for a bad arse well equipped bay boat now a days.

Don’t know if your looking new or used but it seems like more and more slightly used 226s are coming up for sale recently than in years past.

Interested to see what you end up going with, as I’ve been toying with the idea of a used 226 as well. Always considered it a dream boat of mine, but if I could find lightly used one for less than 50k that may be an option.

I've seen a few around that recently, but they're all ~10yrs old.

Most are +/- 10 years old and around 500 hours that are listed for 50k or less. But I’d think over the next few months/years the inventory of used boats should slowly rise. Even those that are posted for 55-60k, there’s always a chance you could get that boat all rigged out and ready to fish for 50k after a bit of negotiating.

Certainly not the same as a brand new boat, but I’d think those are likely half the price of a new one as well.
