So the Maytag / Whirpool Washer toploader is giving me trouble and I like to DIY but my plate is full.

It would not start wife diagnosed and replaced a lid switch at it and it started working. We did about 3 loads, and it seems to be working intermittently and subsequently now, it is not working at all.

Flipped breakers, reset GFIC getting 122 volts at the wall plug.

Tested the cord... it is good

I pulled the capacitor and it seems to get a charge and a slow discharge but there was not an indication as to what the specs are supposed to be. I was getting a 6.5 mf at max on both sides.

Also my wife replaced the water intake valve today. and I ran the electric and capacitor test after that.

I really do not want to deal with the motor as it stopped working after water was added to the drum. On top of that is is $162 for the part. Plus the problems we had leading up to now does not add up to a bad motor to me but I am happy to learn from anyone here about that.

Any advice to repair, or sell me on a Speed Queen if there is one that is large capacity 4.5 and south of $1,500 vs. Maytag from Costco for about $550.

TIA for responses.

There should be a way to put the controls in test mode, so that you can test the various cycles and devices in short order.

Probably not the same but my suspension rods wore out and the extra banging caused all sorts of odd issues. Replaced and everything was fine

Step 1---Go to a locally owned appliance store and buy the most basic SQ (TC5) was the model when I bought mine 3 +years ago.

Step 2---Drag that POS so called "MAYTAG" to the street and enjoy the time you didn't waste on the boat anchor.

You don't need large capacity with a Speed Queen because it fills with more water.

Do you have 6 lights and a start button on the front of the machine?

If so you need to go into diagnostics. On these machines the shift actuator is known to fail often causing issues.
But you may have other issues.
..if it doesn't have the lights and buttons or either way can you post the model number??
Without the model number all advice will be generic.

Thank you for all of the replies and advice. The wife decided she was good with a SQ T5, which is now installed. I learned that floodproof hoses do not work on this machine while burstproof hoses are fine. For anyone on the fence about it, I will add two things I now understand: 1) Because the machine uses 100 percent of the tub, the 3.2 size is more equivalent to 4.0 or so because other top loaders only fill to 75 percent of capacity. 2) There appear to be plans in the future to offer a more significant size machine, but the plant to make it is still being built in Texas.

The issue with the Maytag Centennial (Thank you, Napolean, for answering) is still unknown. It might be a circuit board, but I did get ten or so years out of it, so I am not complaining. The SQ looks good next to the 30-year-old dryer. Dealing with these issues when we use the washer weekly at least adds time constraints, and I just could not add another thing to my immediate needs list right now.

Anyone regret the SpeedQueen after having no agitator in a different washer?

No. The SQ is much faster and does a better job cleaning than the “higher volume” HE washers. It’s only a higher volume because there’s no agitator.
