makes me sad how many of these 80s videos have degraded over time and no original source. meanwhile 'WET arse PUSSY" will forever be stored in digital 8K 60fps glory in about 5,000,000 locations.

RIP Greg

you were one of my first exposures to good music.

eta and props to the YT poster who uploaded that video for picking *THE PERFECT* frame from that video to use as the cover sheet.

RIP

He had a good attitude about Jeopardy, even appearing in a cameo for Weird Al's parody. Recall, that was pre-Eat it and Al needed a boost from Dr. Demento (of course) and some artists whom he was parodying, including Fieger from The Knack (My Bologna) and Greg Kihn.

The Breakup song is a great and authentic Americana rock song. He was inspired by some old drunk, probably a WWII veteran, who was patting him on the back saying, "They don't write 'em like that anymore" and the rest is history.

Broadcast technology of the time. At it's very best, TV was only ~425 lines at the receiver if you had a good one. The producers knew this and didn't bother with higher quality production.

The original TV standards were written in the 40's and transmission bandwidth was limited to ~6Mhz. The station I worked at could do ~12Mhz in house with crappy to very average electronics.

Given what The Beatles accomplished with Now and Then, I wonder if the same could be done with those old videos. Not that rights holder would pay for the conversion.

(edit) The MTV oldies channel on YouTube TV is really really crappy quality. I'm guessing the videos were archived on 3/4" tape. The 1" Ampex tape machines I worked with had much higher video quality.

Do you have supporting information to share for this claim? I Lost on Jeopardy was definitely on the Eat It album (In 3D) and I'd be surprised if it were released as a single before Eat It - given its proximity to the supernova that was Michael Jackson at that time.

Fair is fair. My memory was that Jeopardy was out first, but without a doubt, I Lost on Jeopardy was recorded in December 1983, the video was filmed in late May 1984 and the single released about 10 days after the video was filmed. Obviously, Eat it and and accompanying video was out in February 1984.

RIP.

The gimmick of putting "Kihn" in the words of most of his album titles got lame after awhile though.

We used to joke that he should name one of his albums Kihntrived.

I actually don't even remember the Jeopardy video.

From that 3D album, I always thought the Theme from Rocky XIII was underrated.

We used to do Breakup Song in our cover band. Haven’t played it in a while. We would offer a free drink from the bar if anyone could tell us who did that song.
No one ever got it right. Sad.

I was a mid-level Weird Al fan back in the day. Also, I specifically remember the Greg Kihn cameo in it as a nice touch. Sort of a recognition from the original artist that Al was doing good work (and really helped those original songs attain/regain some higher level of status they might not have otherwise).

Also, having Don Pardo in the video playing himself was a nice touch. Demento is in there, too.

He was just then finding an audience (2nd album) and really only Eat it, Jeopardy and Polkas on 45 got any real traction. Eat it was his breakthrough single, to a degree, but Dare to be Stupid was the first real breakthrough album (although it only hit 50 on the album chart, 3d was a top 20 album, but on the strength of Eat it - DTBS had the title track, Yoda, Like a Surgeon, I Want a New Duck, Hooked on Polkas, a cover of George of the Jungle, just a broader range of the Weird Al experience.)

I know, I know

There were some originals on 3D that were actually good - Midnight Star and Mr. Popeil.

Of course his best original is One More Minute.

I was just playing The Breakup song night before last. There was an interview on YT with him about that song and he said it put 2 of his kids through college. R.I.P
