What are your thoughts on our defense if Greg Penn, Sage Ryan, and Major Burns start

Will those guys finally turn a corner this year or are we in for a long year if no one else steps up to take their jobs?

All 3 of them have shown a lot of physical limitations honestly. I’m not sure how much room they actually have for improvement.

Greg Penn isn't bad
the other two were god awful

Sage and Major literally did everything in their power to avoid contact last year, it was infuriating.

Penn deserves every second, burns will start every game he’s healthy, and Ryan could play linebacker if needed.

No clue why it’s an issue.

Penn is who he is has limitations with range can be hot and cold . The other two have played a lot of football nothing stands out because they cannot put it all together they are missing an ingredient. A blown assignment, missed tackle , bad balance . The Johnson kid from Lafayette at the star position has potential and athleticism ride with him, ride with Alexander and PJ at the corner. BK is old school i understand he has to understand you cannot play a broken record throw it away .

I think you’ll be surprised how much better all of these guys look in the new scheme. Sage is a great athlete. If he can play without thinking, he can be an above average CB. Penn is gonna have a great season just watch. The only one who may be limited is Burns but playing the star makes him a line backer essentially and not a back. He’s got linebacker speed just not good defensive back speed.

The more I listen, the more I think this defense becomes really good by week 5ish.

Maybe I’m just a homer.

new scheme and better coaching can sure up a lot of issues that were had last year.

No telling how much a more aggressive simpler scheme could help these guys. Just my opinion but there is really no way the D can be worse than last year. That was one of the worst SEC defenses I have ever seen much less LSU. An average defense would be much better than last year honestly.

Not judging anyone in a Matt House defense. Clean slate.

Burns is a rover, coach, he’s just gonna go rover.

My belief is with better coaching all around from the DL to the back end it will make them better. The one I'm truly worried about is Ryan. Penn has capable replacements waiting in the wings

Unless the play is happening right in front of him, Sage Ryan has a really slow reaction time getting to the ball. I can’t remember who but someone pointed this out last year with film evidence.

Most concerned about Sage of those 3. Penn is solid. Major is playing a new role that I think probably suits him better.

Major Burns led the team in tackles last year my guy.

Thinking too much will do that. He either wasn’t confident in his assignments or his ability to execute them.

Just a reminder that people thought Damone Clark sucked

I don't expect these guys to have that drastic of a turn around but coaching and experience really does matter

you talking 15 yards downfield? Then he gets up and gloats like he made a big play. No thanks.

he's a safety that plays 15 yards downfield. You guys need to think more critically about your criticisms. Was he perfect? Heck no...and I want to be clear about that. Do I like the gloats? Nope... But I think the frustrations that are pinned to 1 or 2 players on our defense, when we didn't have a D Line coach, and have changed D Line coaches every year for the past like 6 years means something.

Kelly and House should be the start and stop of criticism for how our D played.

Penn can be a solid LB with better coaching and scheme. Like someone said earlier, you can’t judge some of these guys from their play last year. The Matt House scheme was a disaster for multiple reasons.

I think Burns will be improved as well. He can play physical if he isn’t thinking and out of position to make plays like that scheme had him last season.

Sage isn’t an SEC DB. Hopefully Raymond and Baker can help make him serviceable this season but he is a step slow and doesn’t have a burst to recover. Shy’s away from contact as well.

You should go watch tape from last year. I don't know how you could say this seriously if you already had.
