Anyone here have a relative in their family tree who was a "famous criminal" or involved in a crime the public might be familiar with? Would be interested to hear some of the back stories on this. Any distant mobster uncles or something like that? If so how did family members feel about it?

My grandfather's 4th cousin was Baldur von Schirach.

My wife's (no pics) great-grandfather (mother's side) was in the SS, and was executed in Yugoslavia for war crimes.

My father-in-law worked with Ivan Milat for a couple of years.

My great uncle (who died in Leavenworth before I was born) went to see about a farm to rent in his area of Kansas. The owner rented to a young married couple instead. I guess he wanted it bad because he killed them both, buried them in the barn, and moved in.

Not the sharpest knife...

I'm not saying a word about my late wife's family. Nope, not a word.

Great uncle was named in the Warren Commission Report. He was a bagman for Carlos Marcello. Family didn’t discuss it.

Edwin Edwards is related to me through some convoluted family tree links.

That crooked slimeball should win this one for me.

Well we fought a feud that killed more people than the Hatfield's and McCoy's in North La. I wish I could find more information on it but there's very little reporting on it other than a few mentions in places like the NYT and other papers from the time. But the records of the trials are all gone, as is the book a judge was writing about it after he presided over the last trial of one of my ancestors who was never convicted even though he killed a bunch of people right out in public. That's part of the reason he wasn't convicted because the judge was warned what would happen if he did this wrong. And when it was over, they told him to get rid of that manuscript if he knew what was good for him so that's gone. Courthouse burned down so all those are gone.

If I live long enough after retirement I intend to chase this story down and maybe write a book about it if I can get enough information. What I have on it so far is fascinating. When I was a kid it was only mentioned kinda quietly by my grandfather's family who knew a few stories but probably not half as much as I know now because of the internet. The feud was in the 1880-90s so they were getting if from people who lived through it. Lots of stuff like nobody could light up their house at night because people on both sides were shooting through windows. Then they started going after kids in their yards. People getting shot off their horses and wagons from blinds set up beside the roads. It got nuts.

Okay, I need to hear more of this story. Opening for The Who in Paris? I bet your dad has more stories than petty theft.

I’ve got a pretty notorious serial killer who made the talk show rounds in the 80’s. Maybe 3rd cousin or something.

I just doxxed myself to at least half a dozen other cousins who inevitably post on here.

Had a cousin do 20 years for a couple of armed robberies in the early 70s....he was 20 years older so I didn't really know much about him and have never met.

His mom did 10 years or so for embezzling from a law firm.

He got out, in Florida, moved to Cali and became a multi millionaire building houses in San Jose area.

My grandfather ran moonshine from Monroe, La. to Picayune, MS. during prohibition in his souped up rod. Guys like him helped invent NASCAR.

My brother has been a drug addict in BR for decades. He has probably stolen from at least one of you.

Only dumb, gullible, or corrupt people believed that.

My family saw right through it.

I hope he's burning in hell for all the money he stole from the good people of Louisiana.

Baldur von Schirach was descended from signers of the Declaration of Independence.
