Is there an efficient way to sort them?
Neighbor’s dad kept them. Just Pennies.
I can’t help him w that. But is there a way to go thru them or hire a guy?
Some have wheat. Some are “Indian” head. Some are shiny 1975 and nothing special.
But I could not imagine anything but packaging them up for ~$200 and calling it a day.

Sounds like a perfect rainy day project for children.
Turn them all on their back and sort out. Wheat and indian head.
Rolls and plastic machine at Office Depot if so desired.
Indian head pennies are worth about a dollar.

The current melt value of any penny made prior to 1983 is 2.6 cents.

What’s the easiest way to cash in coins these days? Without having to pay a fee

There’s an app that you scan the front and back of any coin and it will tell you the value. I have a few wheat Pennie’s with .30 or more.
You never know

My neighbor did this with his kids. Found a list of "valuable" pennies which included random years that weighed more than others, etc. and let the kids go wild.

I saw a reel the other day and the guy had some kind of separator that scanned the pennies as fast as you could dump them in it, and it separated the copper ones from the zinc ones. He buys $25 boxes of used coins from banks. He then separated out the valuable ones by hand and sold the rest as copper scrap. I believe he ended somewhere around 3 to 4x his money when all done.

My grandfather collected pennies and gold coins. He was a trustee at the local bank and would bring bags of them home. He had a small room dedicated to inspecting them with a goose neck mounted magnifying glass and a lamp. It was his hobby, but he made a collection worth thousands.

I can remember my family doing this back in the early 80s. We had a HUGE pickle jar. Hell, it probably wasn't for pickles, but it was about 5 gallons. It stayed in our kitchen and we would always put our loose change in it. Once it filled up, we dumped it out, looked for old coins (feather pennies, and anything else really old), and then counted and wrapped the coins to put in the bank. No machines....just counting. I could remember my fingers sticking so bad.
