Saving money on airline tickets..

I rarely have the need to fly but that has changed recently. It looks like Delta may be the best option for me due to the airport I need to fly out of. I'm looking for advice on best ways to save on tickets & car rental. Credit card, coupons or anything else??
American Airlines service and reliability suck btw.

I love my delta credit card, use it for everything. However I’ve heard some of the generic Amex card off several similar perks and can be used on more than just delta rewards.

I probably pay more in taxes than you make, but that is not what this is about.

If going with just a backpack - Spirit.
Join their membership thing. Pays for itself after 2-3 flights.

Be flexible with your travel dates. Mid-week flights and avoiding peak travel times can lead to significant savings.

Everyone should have a credit card that offers either hotel or airline rewards. I prefer one with both but you should be getting at least one free trip a year if you plan it right. There are cheaper times of the year, demand changes and sales but you can’t rely on that when you need a flight for a specific date. Being flexible isn’t realistic usually so the best price is usually certain days of the week, airlines that don’t get good reviews (spirit, frontier) , or flying at a time that isn’t ideal.
Having a hub nearby helps but even then prices fluctuate. I priced a trip for a client recently from Atlanta to London direct and then Huntsville to London which connected through Atlanta. The Huntsville trip was cheaper which makes no sense and the client lives closer to Huntsville so it worked out better. Sometimes airlines just don’t make sense.
Use google flights to track costs always though.

I check flight prices on skyscanner.com Wednesday is usually the cheapest day to find flights. Browse in incognito mode.

This flying that you are doing, will it be solo? Is domestic?

The cheapest day to find/book flights, or cheapest to actually fly?

We got a Southwest Airlines Visa 6 years ago and have not had to pay for a flight in 5 years. We fly for pleasure 3/5 times a year and can choose the cheapest flight and fly anytime so that helps.

Delta’s a solid choice. For savings, look into getting their co-branded credit card, SkyMiles can add up quick, and you often get free checked bags.
