Olympics/August Tennis Thread

Pretty uneventful Olympics. They used Dunlop balls, which tend to fly more than the Wilson ones that are used at RG. Between that and the heat, there were some results that were a little surprising for clay.
Alcaraz vs. Joker final on Sunday. Novak still has the knee brace and has talked about it not being 100%, but he's still playing at a high level, although he's +200ish in this one.
We almost had 4
in the men's doubles final but Fritz/Paul lost in the semis. Ram/Krajicek are currently playing for gold vs. Ebden/Peers from Australia.
Iga lost in the semis to Zheng. Emma Navarro lost to Zheng and had some strange comments about her after the loss. Something about her attitude being too cut-throat.
Montreal starts this weekend, then there's Cincy, and before you know it the Open is here.

What's up, man? Wondered where you've been. Somebody does have a thread on the Olympics board. I'm surprised Swiatek lost, but Zheng gave Iga trouble at RG a couple of years ago when she was in the midst of that long winning streak. I think tomorrow is going to play out like the Wimbledon final. But, I like that it's two out of three. Novak can just go for it and not worry about breaking down after five hours. I guess he has acted hurt at times the last few days.
I saw Sinner was getting some heat for pulling out of the Olympics, but then frolicking with his GF in the sea and then going to play Canada. I'm guessing most people in the Olympics will pull out of Canada like Novak did.
Cincy and USO should be entertaining. At least with hardcourts you probably have the biggest spread of guys who can compete.

I think I saw something about how Zheng is not friendly in the locker room and everybody needs to get along on tour. I'm like, what? This is dog eat dog on the tour. I thought I read that Navarro is Pegula rich, so she obviously doesn't need to win to survive.
Collins' weird comments after hitting Iga and then retiring from singles with two games to play, only to play doubles, were disappointing.

Well since Washington already got fricked over by the timing of the Olympics, I'm guessing they didn't want to do the same to Montreal, so they had to make it only a week long. And no way they could play best of 5 without days off. Some guys were playing 3 times in a day with mixed doubles included.

Didn't even realize there was an Olympics Board lol.
That makes sense now that you mention it. She's expecting this friendly atmosphere in the locker room I guess, and Zheng is out there trying to feed her family.
Strange loss by Shelton tonight. He was cruising up until 6-4, 5-5 and he kinda broke himself to lose the 2nd. From what I watched Cobolli wasn't really playing all that well.

Did anyone see the strange Shelton v Shapo QF in DC? I saw the highlights and saw Shapo get defaulted on an unsportsmanlike. Got into a verbal altercation with a fan. I couldn't tell if the chair was going to just award a point to Shelton, which would've been match point, but I believe just a regular loss. Shapo called the head Ref, was defaulted and he lost the $$ and points and everything via default. Crazy.

I heard the same thing happened to Rublev and he was able to appeal and get the points and money back.
People were bitching about the chair ump but I read that he gave Shapo a warning before. It shouldn't matter that it happened on match point if that's the rule.

Maybe I am missing something here, but pretty sure that Olympic tennis has always been best 2 out of 3 for the men.

I think so, but some finals were 3 out of 5. I seem to remember Fed/Murray was and I saw that Rafa won three straight sets in '08.

If they made the full tournament 3/5 you would have a lot less top guys play

I don't think I've seen him break down w/ tears of joy after a win like we saw after that Gold Medal match. A Gold was the only thing left for him to win, now he's done it all.

It was an exceptional tennis match for being a best of three (3) straight-set victory.
Djokovic played some shots in the most pivotal moments that were jaw-dropping. Neither broke serve.
His reaction to winning was special. I watch most of the men's slam championship matches, and it's always cool to see the champ's reaction.
This one was on another level. Never seen any player react like Djokovic did.
It was awesome.
