Am I the only one who didn't know the NFL made the surprise onside kick illegal?

This news apparently came out in March when I was out of the country so imagine my surprise when I find out that onside kicks have to be announced in advance, can now only happen in the fourth quarter, and can only be performed by the team that is trailing.

What an idiotic decision by the NFL.

Will they start handicapping the weaker teams next? This is dumb

The NFL has been watering down their product for years. Owners don’t care and as long as the cap keeps rising, the players won’t either.

After the Saints No-Call, my interest level in the NFL has gone down significantly. It’s very obvious that there is no parity for smaller-market teams.

What could possibly be the reasoning for this?

Don’t give them any ideas—the No Fun League may start adding the point spreads as actual points to the shitty teams to make the games “more competitive.”

That was just the straw that broke the camels back. It had gotten so infuriatingly predictable that on any big 3rd down conversion there would be a flag. Or drives by the opponent extended 2-3 times on a ticky tack holding.

You can never get excited about a big play anymore.

I mean Kansas City isn't exactly a large market.

I don’t even understand the point of this change.safety? I don’t recall a injury ever happening on a onside kick

It’s necessary for the new kickoff structure to work

I’m personally excited for the new kickoffs, as it should induce many more returns than we move seen in the past. If the cost is giving up surprise inside kicks, I can only hope that what we get is worth it

I learned this past weekend that it is possible to have 12 players on the field for kickoffs.

I’m excited to see the new kickoff rules. My son kicks with a couple of pro kickers and he says they’re practicing some strange techniques…like the ball flat on the tee. Sounds like they’re angling to kick something difficult to field…as opposed to high or long like in the past.

Pretty sure this is due to the new kick off structure that the XFL uses. Same
Rule is in the XFL. Can’t really have that and have surprise onside kicks

What they really need to do is add about 5 more regular season games. I think that would make the football really good then.

The good news is that the new formation was adopted as a one-year experiment. To continue it in 2025, another 24 votes of the 32 owners will be needed to keep it going.

Dumb idea but its not gonna last

Let me refine that

onside kicks have to be announced in advance by a little person wearing appropriate gear and the number 1/2,
can now only happen in the fourth quarter on even numbered days of the month
, and can only be performed by the team that is trailing by fewer than 3 or more than 8 points.

Requiring the head coach to do the chicken dance is optional for two points..
