My dad is in the market for a new tv and he seems to be dead set on getting a Samsung and only has enough space in his built-in cabinet to get a 55”.
Looking for recommendations. I told him to be sure and get one with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

LG over Samsung for me.
I have lg, Samsung and Sony in the house. All 55” and up. The LGs have the best picture IMO.
ETA: the picture will only be as good as your input. My stepdad has some really expensive tvs with shite cable inputs and I use YouTube tv via Chromecast. My tv quality is much better than his with cheaper tvs.

From an OLED perspective Samsung wins in picture quality every time due to higher brightness, wider color gamut, and better color volume. LG still has no real answer for QD-OLED panel colors, which also makes them better in HDR.
This continues to ring true in 2024 with the S90D vs C4.

Won't really matter unless he plays video games

Not true at all, fast action scenes need 120Hz otherwise you get blur, sports as well. Panel refresh rate matters for any content that is moving very fast on the screen.

Doesn't really mean anything without knowing which models of those brands you are comparing especially since you say you run "cheaper TVs".

Because the human eye cant really discern much above 15-20 hz with a maximum of around 60-75 hz.
It's biology.
For example. The light bulbs in your house flash at 60 cycles per second. Does anyone here perceive that flicker when they look at a light bulb?

He went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Samsung S90D from Best Buy. Got it for $1599, which they said was $400 off.
Supposed to be delivered next Monday.
Appreciate the input from everyone!

Actually it's pretty accurate. Only slightly exaggerated to show the differences in a still image same for the other one as well. Typically how that works.

Hey man, I can't help that I'm a biologist and have taken anatomy and physiology. Sorry if reality undermines marketing hype.....

Great for you, at least you admit to not knowing tech which is what applies here. Very very dumb comment tbh. Sorry not sorry.
