It is four weeks since North Korea invaded South Korea. Here is what was going on 74 years ago during the week of 10-16 July 1950:

quote:

Elements of the US 24th Division, the only American one that's arrived in force in Korea so far, take on the North Korean forces aiming for Taejon, but they are badly - and easily - defeated each time. In the center and the east coast it's the ROK - the forces of the South - that are reorganizing and getting into position to try to stop the enemy. And Douglas MacArthur is officially appointed commander of all UN forces in Korea.

This is all on Truman who, almost immediately after WW2, foolishly began slashing defense spending and drastically drawing down forces.

That encouraged the newly-communist Chinese and North Koreans, not to mention the USSR in Eastern Europe.

Truman rushed over the 24 ID from outside Tokyo. They had been almost inactive outside of Tokyo before deployment. They had very little time to train before being thrown in at Busan.

But just wait 2 months for the 1 in 5000 chance to pay off

if i am remembering correctly, we had 2.5 inch bazookas and small numbers of 3.5 inch. 2.5 inch were useless against the NK tanks and we had no real defense to them until we got the 3.5 inch in SK in larger numbers

the USMC saved the UN and SK bacon in the Pusan perimeter

The North Korean Army deployed about 150 tanks that Stalin gave to them. All of them were T34/85 models dating from 1944 - 1945.

I remember reading one soldier in Korea saying "When you hear 'task force', run!"

This book from the Marine Corps Historical Association is a great read about the Korean War. I read it a few years ago. Capt. "Ike" Fenton was a hero during the early Marine arrival in Korea. His younger son was a Senior at Quantico High School when I was there and his older son was friends with my older sister.

Fenton was ordered to hold a hill at all costs (because retaking it would cost way more lives). Fenton replied to the order " “Don’t worry, Colonel.
The only Marines that will be leaving this ridge tonight will be dead
ones.”

My grandpa said it was the coldest place he had ever been. And whenever they entered a village, villagers would try to buy his captains dog.

My second father-in-law was in a Sherman in Europe for a while. He got out of that line as soon as he could. He said their nick name was "Ronsons."

The Pershings were designed to be German Tiger killers, but arrived too late.

Truman had kept South Korea lightly armed because he was afraid President Syng-man Rhee would invade the North.

If you are talking about Task Force Smith and the first few units to arrive, they were outnumbered nearly 20:1 with no real armor or anti armor weapons. What did you think would happen and quite frankly they held on much longer than they probably should have

My father was a 2LT stationed in Japan when all this started. He was mobilized into the 1st Calvary Division soon after. He got to Korea on the 19th and first contact with the North Koreans on the 24th. Awarded his first Silver Star then. Wounded on the 31st, and awarded his 2nd Silver Star and Purple Heart. Evacuated back to Japan and ended up returned Korea without orders an awarded another Purple Heart, Bronze Star and a 3rd Silver Star before leaving Korea. Crazy times!
