Best base for Amalfi coast. ?

In the early stages of planning an Amalfi coast trip for late June of next summer . Would be me , mrs jkyle , and three teenagers. We would like to visit Positano but not stay there. (Not good value for airbnbs). Would also like to take a day trip to capri . Unsure of renting a car but leaning towards not from all the negative feedback I’ve gotten in that regard. Would really like to be somewhat centrally located with great views. For those of you that have been which towns did you like best that you would suggest as a good base for 5 days. Thanks in advance.

We spent a week in Positano a few years ago and loved it. We did not get a rental car but took the ferry for day trips to Capri
, the Town of Amalfi and Ravello.
I can understand that you are getting high prices in Positano, but check for places that are a ways up the hill from the beach. The closer to the bottom the more expensive the accommodations.
We stayed at the Villa Gabrisa in a room with a giant private terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. It was not super expensive because it was a short hike up the hill. Fantastic.

My wife and I used Sorrento as our base during our honeymoon.

If you considering Positano, we loved La Fenice. Reasonably priced, family run, and a great pool. The rooms are very basic but million dollars views.

I second this! Sorrento.

Absolutely loved Sorrento although not technically on the Amalfi coast. It’s a great ton center for a tourist area. Positano is too difficult to navigate as a base.

I'll add another vote for Sorrento.

Thank you all for the replies. Suddenly my wife is hung up on positano and I really like ravello. I’m sure I’ll cave and break the bank to be in positano (Instagram alley).

It is worth spending extra money to stay in Positano.
As for Ravello - It is a gorgeous place, but it is isolated. You get there by going to the Town of Amalfi and getting a ride up the high hill or small mountain to Ravello. It is only about 5 km, but it can take a half hour because the road is narrow and winding. Once there, it is an ordeal to get to anyplace else. We went there on a day trip from Positano.
Positano is fantastic.
Lots to do, many excellent restaurants, easy to get to other places on the Amalfi Coast by ferry, and, most of all, spectacular scenery.

We stayed in Positano with our 4 teenage boys in an amazing AirBnB. It was a great place to stay and to do day trips to Amalfi, Ravello, etc as well as to take a boat trip. We also hiked the Path of the Gods and walked down to Positano from end of trail (lots of steps). Link to our rental below - the owner was fantastic - lived in nearby unit and went to school in New Orleans so spoke fluent English.

there is a little train that runs from naples to sorrento. there is a stop along the way at the pompeii ruins. you will want to catch that train from sorrento to pompeii. i got to sorrento by taking train from rome to naples. went downstairs and caught the train to sorrento. there were warnings of pickpockets/thieves riding that train but i didn't have any problems.

We stay in Positano. The hotels there are amazing. I’m not into Air B&B’s. The best thing we did there was rent a Gazza boat with a captain for two 8 hour day trips. Great boat. We explored private beaches, caves, stopped in various towns, bars, and restaurants. Best way to see the coast IMO is from the water. The company we rented from was in Positano right on the beach, but we booked months in advance.
Le Sirenuse was probably our families favorite dining experience ever.
Music on the Rocks was such a funky bar/club. It certainly puts off that I’m vacationing on the Mediterranean vibe.

That's a sexy accommodation.

We ended up going with this one. AirBnB. Not technically in Positano but an elevated view of it and within walking distance. Looks like a decent spot from the reviews.
Looks like a great spot - views should be fantastic. You are probably quite close to one of our favorite restaurants, La Tagliata. Definitely worth a trip there for dinner - great food, great views, live music.

Only ever been to Sorrento so can't speak to the others, but we had no complaints.

Stayed in Positano for 5 days last month, after walking around and climbing stairs for and hour I rented a vespa for the next 4 days. We love it there, move to Sorrento for another 5 days, plenty to do in both places. Take a ferry ride to Capri and spend the day there. Take a bus or taxi to Anacapri. I spent 30 days along the Amalfi Coast.

Wow 30 days. That’s awesome. Renting a Vespa is def in my plans. I hear it can get a little wild on those roads but I feel like if I can drive around Santorini I can drive anywhere. Maybe I’m underestimating them.

It most definitely get tight going around some of the curves and cliff. but nothing you can't handle, I rented two, one for my daughter who is 19 and one for myself, my wife road with me. We did 250 miles easily in 3 days, some of the most beautiful views ever.
