Samsung can't innovate anymore

Android Central slammed Samsung after it rolled out the new Fold. Can't say AC is wrong.
Thanks to the carriers, there is little competition for Samsung.
Android Central website.
The OnePlus Open is probably the best tablet but it won't work on Verizon and smaller carriers such as Xfinity and Cspire. Just bears out my thesis that carriers are stifling innovation in this country. Forget Chinese phones, can't get the Nothing phones or Sony Xperia VI here because the carriers won't even whitelist the devices.

Samsung is the largest Android manufacturer globally, and it is in a dominant position in the U.S., where it outsells its nearest rival by a sizeable margin. With the brand effectively unchallenged in the region, there really isn't any need to innovate or come up with differentiated products, so Samsung has been churning out the same phone year over year for the better part of three years.
This is the case with its latest foldables; the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 don't have any meaningful hardware upgrades outside of IP48 ingress protection, and they're identical to their predecessors — which were similarly identical to their predecessors, and so on. And because Samsung is inherently aware of the fact that it has no rivals, both devices get a $100 price hike.
Thanks to the carriers, there is little competition for Samsung.
quote:
The U.S. market routinely misses out on the best Android phones, but there's at least some variety in this area. With foldables, that gulf is clearly noticeable — Chinese manufacturers are constantly pushing the boundaries in this segment, and all of the 2024 foldables I've used thus far have been nothing short of incredible.
But these brands don't have any presence in the U.S., the one region where foldables are actually selling well. That leaves potential foldable customers locked into Samsung's orbit of indifference, and based on what I've seen of the new launches, that trajectory is firmly pointed toward mediocrity.
Samsung can get away with this because it knows there really isn't another alternative in the U.S. There are standout foldables available today — Honor's Magic V2 and Vivo X Fold 3 Pro immediately come to mind — but these devices aren't coming to the U.S. Even with foldables that are sold officially in the country, like the OnePlus Open, you can only buy it unlocked at OnePlus and Amazon, and without any carrier backing, the device doesn't move the needle in any measurable way.
It's not just the foldables either; Samsung introduced the Galaxy Watch Ultra — which is a blatant copy of Apple's Watch Ultra — and the Buds 3 Pro eschewed their original design to mimic AirPods. The only new product I was interested in was the Galaxy Ring, but Samsung somehow found a way to hobble that — the smart ring only works with Samsung phones, so if you have an Android device from any other manufacturer, it will not connect to it.

I am staying on my 5, if the Fold6 Slim/Ultra ends up happening this fall I will grab it. That sounds up in the air now but damn I hope it is still coming in October 8" display, super slim and lightweight. LINK
I did get the Watch 7 though, $77 with trade-in of my 6 plus an extra free band.

It's not just Samsung. Apples latest offerings are stale as frick too. Extra battery life and a case made of titanium?? Hell time to toss the 14 in the trash!

It's all phones, honestly. There's been a bell curve on what they can do and we're starting to see the flattening of that curve.

While this is true, to be fair Samsung's used the Ultra name and its devices since 2020. They also introduced their watch Pro 5 which is basically the Ultra first also. They all copy each other just look at iOS 18 it's basically Apple Android blatant copies in the software yet everybody's like gooing all over themself because they can move an app wherever they want now lol. I've been on both platforms it was refreshing to switch off of Apple and back to Samsung That's all I can really say but they all copy each other just pick your poison. I like both platforms but I like the things that Android does there's more customization and you don't feel trapped into being forced to like things the way that Apple wants you to like it. That's the main difference and RCS is working pretty decent and my old ladies on the beta so really it's like almost I never left Apple the messaging is almost the same.

well out of warranty blah blah blah; thank God my wife had bought it from Costco because they looked at the situation and even though this was WELL OUTSIDE of their policy for electronics (90 days i think) they agreed to give us a full refund.
wait what were we talking about again?

One major problem with the foldable is their cameras are way behind their regular smartphone offerings.

Not really, they have the same 50MP camera from the non-ultra S22/S23. AI is mattering more these days than MP. I unfold my screen and fire up Adobe Lightroom for on the go editing and it's fantastic. Just another reason once you go Fold there is no going back to the old school brick phones it's like a different world of tech.
But I understand $1,800-2,000 is a lot for most for a phone, granted hardly just a phone though.

Got my wife a fold for Christmas, she says she's never going back.

Isn't this every year for apple?

It's not even made of titanium. Its made WITH a tiny bit of titanium in it.

JerryRigEverything has put those statements from Apple and others to the test by completely dismantling a new iPhone 15 Pro Max. After removing the front glass and the myriad of tiny screws, the YouTuber uses an angle grinder to cut the chassis in half. The cross-section of the chassis reveals that Apple has used approximately 1mm of titanium to overlay an aluminum chassis. The titanium is on the outside, while the aluminum is on the inside.

I don't know what else we would expect phones to do at this point. Whether we're talking about Samsung, Apple, or whoever else it's a mature product at this point.

Agreed. I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max. Still does everything I need. Dropping $1k+ on a phone every year or two seems really unnecessary.

Their soundbars have led the pack in features and controllability. Unfortunately they are trash and we have had three fail in under two years all the exact same way and all with different equipment. Seems like 12-18 months in and ARC mode no longer works which is a pretty big deal for some people including the one I got for my parents who don’t hear too well but still have all the old people stuff like cable box and dvd/Blu-ray and need multiple inputs.

Bastards gave me another $100 off and got me to upgrade my 5 to a Navy 6. Ain't mad about it!

I’m looking at the Fold 6. I’ve been reading about it on Reddit. Can you answer Outlook and Teams from the front screen? Getting mixed reviews. My jump out of iOS for this one.

Teams you can for sure. I don't see why you wouldn't with outlook as well everything works on the outer screen moreso than the inner screen plus the camera is much better than the hidden under display camera of the tablet.
