NBA finalizes TV deals with ESPN, NBC, Amazon, but TNT could still match: Sources

While the NBA and its partner agreed to all the language, incumbent TNT Sports continues to threaten to match. The CEO of TNT Sports’ parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, has publicly stated he may attempt to use language in the current contract to remain involved with the NBA. If Zaslav goes through with that, he is expected to target Amazon’s package.
The next step is for the league’s governors to approve the agreements with ESPN, NBC and Amazon, which is expected to be a formality.
The board of governors has meetings Tuesday in Las Vegas. At some point following the final step by the league’s governors, the NBA will send the finished contracts to TNT Sports.
At that point, the company will have five days to make its move. If it declines, then the NBA is expected to be an official announcement before the Olympics, which open on July 26th.

The salary cap should sky rocket.
Currently, ESPN and TNT pay a combined $2.6 billion per season.
With these new deals, ESPN pays $2.6 billion, NBC $2.5 billion, and Amazon $1.8 billion.
So the NBA is going from $2.6 billion in TV revenue to $6.9 billion.

The league should take the Finals from them for overshadowing gm 1 with that bs Hurley to the Lakers story. Half the pregame Countdown was how he would do with the Lakers.
Also they've been saying that "but TNT can still match" line for like 3 months. Pretty clear it ain't happening.

TNT couldn't match until there was a deal to match....that clock starts as soon as these deals are formally agreed upon.

Does anyone know how soon the salary cap increase will be? Max contract are going to start approaching 100 million per season. Locking some players up might be the right move if the increase will happen within the next couple of years.

They could've expressed their intention to match at any time. If they wanted to keep the deal they would've done that or not even let it get to that point. Especially when the star of their basketball coverage was going in front of every mic he could find to shite on them for their handling of the media deal.

I agree I don’t think they will match. I was simply stating their clock hasn’t even started yet for that to happen.

For one thing it'd counteract Zaslav's public statement that TNT doesn't need the NBA. But since we knew roughly what the numbers were, I'm sure all the parties involved did as well. It's basically restricted free agency if they wanted to keep it.

The big question is...What does that mean in terms of us being able to watch Pels games? Will it be as bad as baseball with all the blackouts? gonna have to pay for several streaming services in hopes of catching "some" games?

I haven't seen any mention of the local games in these talks. I would assume this just means its the first domino that needs to fall and then the NBA can decide what to do with the rights they got back from Bally's.

Yeah idk what blackout rules will apply going forward, but this will most certainly put more nationally televised games on tv. The article says that once the NFL season is over, there will be at least 1 game on national tv every day of the week.
