Explain Hurd to the Portal in Football Terms

I’m not a big baseball follower so how big of loss is this? Would it be the equivalent to losing a Perkins type?

Hurd being in the portal is the same as a football player being in the portal.

Not a big loss. Not a loss at all really

Can’t explain it easier than this
Jay assumes Hurd going in the draft. So finds replacement
Hurd doesn’t like where he is drafted. Jay may not have spot
Hurd in portal in case Jay don’t have a spot

No one expected him back after this season regardless. Hopefully he finds his control and excels in the future.

It is simply a fall-back option in case he does not get drafted high enough in the current draft. If same were to occur, he then can negotiate with any school (including LSU) for his services next year. Odds are he will be drafted in the Top 10 rounds and sign a professional contract.

well a football player can’t get drafted and decide to come back.

It’s like someone you don’t trust but sometimes feel like you have to use anyway.
Whoever that would compare to
Maybe Major Burns

Let's say Hurd was a WR on the football team. Then, in the offseason, he entered the portal.

If he's gone, then that's that but he pitched in some big games and I'll always be grateful for his contributions.

John Emery Jr. Talented player who has contributed in big time moments but overall disappointed. May be back after all. Well wishes and more either way.

It’s the same as losing Deuce Chestnut.

Ryan perriloux but without the trouble.
Loads of talent that never came about. We would love to keep you, but will not miss a beat without you.

There is no comparison to football, because of how the draft works in baseball.
Today is the last day you can enter to be eligible to possibly transfer if necessary, so he has to put his name in there just in case he doesn't like his draft money offered. So if LSU proceeds without him he has a backup plan. If he wants to go somewhere else to pitch more then he also has a backup plan.
He is most likely signing a pro contract. It's just to protect himself. LSU has to proceed as if he's not going to be around.

If Hurd threw a football instead…he’d throw 5 INTs in a single game.
