Back from a three week road trip to Idaho

My wife has been obsessed with the natural beauty of Idaho and wanted to rent a cabin for a few days. I'm not keen on flying but I don't mind driving, so we were able to put together a raad trip itinerary that took us through 11 states. We departed Baton Rouge and stayed at my parent's home in Hot Springs, AR as our launch point. From there it was:
Wichita, KS
Denver, CO
Casper, WY
Victor, ID (Jackson, WY)
Garden Valley, ID - This is where the cabin was rented
Salt Lake City, UT
Cheyenne, WY
Kansas City, MO
Hot Springs, AR
Baton Rouge, LA (home)
We had a great time, and because we stayed in all the cities for 2 nights minimum, we did a lot of fun stuff and ate at a lot of great restaurants. I'll write up more on each city but I highly recommend this road trip and I am looking to plan more to see as much of this beautiful country as I can.

Going to Victor in a few weeks for most of the summer! Love it there.

Definitely do the WW1 museum.
We ate at Grünauer, Joe’s BBQ, and Q39. Q39 was delicious (probably the best KC BBQ place currently) and Grünauer was maybe the best meal of the trip and perfect after the WW1 Museum.
We also took a ride to see the Chiefs and Rockies stadiums and stayed in a beautiful part of the city. KC surprised me with how pretty it was.

Yeah we absolutely loved it. Stayed at a farmhouse and the Tetons greeted us right outside our door.
We dined at Teton Thai and had a huckleberry shake at Victor Emporium. Had a great breakfast at Butter.

Butter is our go to place for brunch and Teton Tai is also great. I highly recommend the AmeriAsia Bistro, a fusion bistro serving South East Asian flare with an American twist, if you’re back in that area. There’s also some good hiking in the National Forest, with both steep and not too steep trails if you have kids. Glad y’all enjoyed it. I may make it my retirement destination.

My cousin Mike owned and ran a restaurant in Victor for many years...finally shut it down las year. Grumpy's Goat Shack.

Was your trip before the highway from Victor to Jackson washed out?

It literally happened the week before we went to Victor/Jackson.
Since we stayed in Victor, it took almost 2 hours to drive to Jackson, WY. We only went for a day but I can’t imagine the poor people who work in Victor (or around it) and commute to Jackson (and vice versa)
Edit: looks like they have already made a new path to open us the road for commuters in three weeks

On our way from Victor to Garden Valley we stopped at Redfish Lake. Absolutely unreal how beautiful it was.

Do your parents live in Hot Springs proper, or Hot Springs Village? Sorry if nosy. I'm trying to find as much info as I can on HSV from current residents.

depending on when you were there you had some wild weather. it snowed on the 24th despite the temps being in the 90s the previous week. i'll bet the middle fork of the payette was running fierce. rivers were in serious runoff then.
looks like you made it to stanley, did you take 93 up through mackay and 75 down? you would have driven by mt borah, idaho's tallest peak.
make it up to mccall at all? mccall doesn't have a high-profile reputation like some places in idaho, despite it being where everyone from boise seems to head to (sun valley seems to be full of people from seattle, SLC, and twin falls whereas boiseans tend to vacation in mccall).

Thanks for all the info as Idaho will be on my bucket list for 2025. It has always been my dream. Been hitting the east coast and mid West lately.

Must have felt suicidal driving back into BR after that itinerary

They live in the Village. I’ve been there about six times and I love the place. Would move there tomorrow if I could.
Anything you want to know, ask away.

We timed it just right and had beautiful warm days and cool nights. When we left some rain moved in, and when we left Victor snow rolled in. The entire trip was us timing the weather pretty much perfectly.

It was nice to get back to flat land, but yeah the scenery got more and more depressing as we got closer to home

Thank you. I've been to Hot Springs many times; but never the village. Do they have everything they need within the gates? I know about the health club, courts, lakes, and golf courses. But do they have to go outside the gates to grocery shop, get a drink somewhere, etc?
I know it isn't necessarily a "retirement community", but I'm guessing it is majority seniors living there? How is the traffic? Is it safe to ride a bicycle on the roads?
We've been looking at condos there for a while on realtor and zillow. I'm not much of a golfer but everything else I've read makes me want to move there now.
