Have a twenty year old Land Cruiser with stock rims that are getting discolored. Would rather paint them a flat black than get new ones. Teenage son’s car. He’s paying for it. Just trying to give him some solid advice on whether to get new ones (don’t see the point) versus get the existing ones painted (don’t want them to look like shite). Anyone have any experience/advice on doing them yourself or paying to have it done somewhere? Expected cost to have them done “professionally”? Figure it’s gotta be a lot less than getting new ones. Appreciate any help

Split the difference. Go to a salvage yard and see what you can find for the cheap.

You could try plasti-dip and peel off if you didn't like the results.

Don't paint wheels (why do people call these rims?).

You dip the wheels.

If you do this you can get a liberal city to pay for it

Just get some spray paint and wing it.

Yep. This is the way. It's actually a solid way to enhance the appearance of the wheels if they're worn.

Cleaned rims on a 00 4Runner and used self etching primer and duplicolor wheel paint. Every happy with the results.

I refinished the rally rims on my old chevy. I had them bead blasted to bare metal and used a self etching primer, acrylic topcoat and clear all from Eastwood Paint products. They came out better than new.
New from GM (Kelsey-Hayes) wasn't all that great from the factory back then, so that might not be saying a whole lot.

If you pay to have it done this is the way.

My son and I did a rattle-can job on a mid 70s FJ Land Cruiser, including the wheels.

It looked OKish for 3 more years until I got rid of it.
