And if so, is it much different than the techniques you might use at the Gulf State Pier in Gulf Shores?

Also, does anyone know where I can find a discussion board or something like that, that talks about how best to fish it?

Oh, and one other thing? What about that old hiway bridge across Pensacola Bay? Can you still fish that? I haven't been around that way in years.

Thanks much.

Oh, and another thing.

Any recommendations on other piers to fish from the Orange Beach area to Pensacola? Or maybe some good bank fishing spots?

Stormy weather brings the king mackerel in. Circle hook with a frozen cigar minnow and the drag will scream soon. I’ve had better luck on the Navarre Beach pier than the Pensacola Beach pier. A black and pink sacalait jig will catch croakers if looking for light tackle action.

The old 3 mile bridge is long enough and offers (I think) better fishing options than the Gulf Pier.

Try the Pensacola Fishing Forum. A world of info on there about both places. Lots of non boat fishing opportunities around the area.

Bring some “gotcha” lures and straw rigs and enjoy catching all the Spanish mackerel you’d ever want!

As posted above, making the drive down to Navarre may be worth it. It’s been years since I have fished either, but much preferred the pier itself in Navarre, as well as the people who generally fish it.

A sabiki rig jigged near a piling will get you all the live bait you may need. Early mornings on the end of the pier for king macks, cobia can often be caught but be prepared for 500 jigs to be thrown in the general direction of wherever one is sighted… it’s chaotic.

What about the Bob Sikes fishing pier/bridge? Any thoughts on that? Also, I'm really more interested in flounder, trout and redfish.

Check out some videos on Angler up with Brant on Youtube. He fishes all over that area, surf, wading, bayside, soundside and piers. His most popular vids are all shore/pier based fishing.

It'll give you an idea of where to go and what to use.

At 7:30 he fishes a really nice looking wading/bank spot. Pretty sure i found it via google earth. If you know the area well, you shpuldnt have a problem finding it. Look for landmarks in the background of this spot to get an idea!

Lot of kings caught but it is a MADHOUSE...if you like full contact fishing it is probably fun. Last few times I was there hundreds of people were sabiking blue runners by the thousands....they would have several coolers full of hardtails and catching them as fast as they could.

It took me way too long to discern where he was fishing in that video considering how much time I spend in the area , but I am pretty sure I figured it out. I assumed initially that he was in Big Lagoon or Johnson Beach, but I had to rule those out.

Yup. That's it

I was on the lagoon side of Johnson's Beach yesterday and picked up a nice trout and a mangrove snapper. Then on the Northside where I picked up five mangrove snapper.

Live shrimp and bull minnows (cocahoes). Mangroves will tear up some bull minnows.

If you fish that area in old river at this time of year the boat traffic is terrible. But in March and April there are some nice trout to be had.

Good choice for wade fishing. Johnson Beach park is such a hidden gem. You can easily walk from beach to lagoon or vice versa in 10 mins and usually have the place to yourself for a mile in each direction. Between the entrance and the end of the paved road, there are 3-4 distinct points. I used to fish them all the time before I started towing a boat down there and I still drift the same areas these days. A light south wind at day break before the boat traffic heats up can be magical. There is another spot in that body of water that is insanely good in the summer as well.

I pull my Ankona skiff over there for our two week vacation each year, and we heading over for that trip on Friday. We rent a house towards the end of West Beach Blvd in GS. People who live across the highway let me beach it in their backyard on Little Lagoon, so I hit it pretty hard. The biggest issue is finding decent fishing on a W or SW wind, which iis basically all of June it seems.

Tried Bon Secour river last year at this time to get out of the west wind and did just ok. Same with the north shoreline down by Fort Morgan. Usually pull it over to Perdido and launch at the state park and take the fam over to Sand Island to watch the Blue Angels practice and at least one other day to strictly fish that area.

Been doing that for the last ten years. Any general areas you know about that I might be missing?
