I am meeting my daughter in Fairbanks Alaska and driving her home down the Alaska highway all the way to MS. We have 14 days to make the trip, any stops recommended? I am flying up July 11th, would it be better to buy tickets now or wait until closer.

I have driven to MT many times and have gone different ways up and back to MS. Favorite was up through Sioux Falls across the Badlands second was down through Idaho, Utah and Arizona but tell you the drive from Flagstaff back east is terrible. Drive down through New Mexico from Colorado Springs is amazing also, really can’t go wrong any way you decide.

see what you are going to see before you descend the front range of the Rockies because you are in for some boring driving after that.

once you hit Denver I would go south to New Mexico then El Paso and San Antonio and then embrace the one day of suck after that

Are you interested in the National Parks? You could drive through about a dozen without going too far out of your way if that interest you?

We’re on about a 3 1/2 week road trip now; left eastern NC a week ago yesterday and am in Klamath Falls, OR now. Got a family thing here for 4 nights then we’re going to CA to see several NP before going home.

Provincial Parks in northern BC are worth the drive.

US Hwy 50 across NV "The Loneliest Road in America".
50 across Colorado is really pretty as well.

Hwy 50 is closed west of Gunnison until maybe around July 4th due to bridge repair.

A safety closure is in place for a bridge on US Highway 50 located west of Gunnison.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has closed the bridge at the urging of the Federal Highway Administration and state bridge engineering experts….identified anomalies in the bridge on Thursday, April 18.

The goal is to restore limited vehicle access on the US 50 Blue Mesa bridge by July 4, 2024.

If so, you can get the America the Beautiful annual pass for $80. Gets the driver and up to three passengers into National Parks and Federal Recreational lands. You can order it by mail or just buy one at a park entrance.

About the America the Beautiful pass—if you’re active duty or a veteran, it’s free.

Those that qualify can get a pass at most national park visitor centers. Veterans need to provide proof by either a DD214, veteran designated driver license or VA identification card.

That’s a good idea. If you are old, like me, you can get a Senior pass for life. I think I paid around $20 10-15 years ago and it has saved me $100s.

The OP would break even after about 3 NP (US as it won’t help in Canada). Yellowstone & Grand Teton are $35/vehicle or $20/person. Driving through those two would cost $70 without the pass.

Agreed. No one should ever pass up a road trip like this.
