On This Day: June 17, 2000 — Brad Cresse singles in Ryan Theriot to give LSU the 6-5 win over Stanford. The victory would be Skip Bertman’s 29th at the CWS and his fifth and final national title.

That one title is as many as this remaining CWS field has combined.

Ah yes, the "Stunford" game! That was a HUGE birthday present for me that day! I still think of it every year!

I was 9 years old and followed this team religiously.
We were at our fishing camp watching the game, and my dad got pissed bc we were losing and decided it was time to go fishing.
I had no choice to but to go and was not happy about it.
His friend with us listening on his Walkman and gave us updates. This guy was always full of it so my dad didn’t believe him that we won!
We called home when we got back to confirm we won.
I still haven’t let my dad live that one down for making us miss it!

Yeah, and their pitcher, last named Wayne, was throwing this pretty wicked slider. It had quite the tail on it. And Cresse would swing and miss at it. He struck out on 3 of these sliders in a row by swinging and missing. His next at bat, the same thing happened. Finally, I think it was Cresse's third time facing this guy (if my memory serves me correctly... it might have only been two at-bats against Wayne), he swings and misses on the first 2 (again, the exact same slider). Finally, Wayne threw him another one that he FINALLY connected on, and that was the walk off hit!

Later when Wayne was interviewed, he said something along the lines of: "I was throwing him my slider, and he had no clue what to do with it... until finally he did."

I was in the front row of right field. Right by paintboy who almost f-d us with ray wrights catch. Best road trip I’ve ever had.

Camped out all night for those seats. Back in the winner take all days.

I went with a couple of friends and my 8-year old son. Great memories. I think comeback victories are the most memorable. Ray Wright catch was a nerve wracking and exciting moment.

Quite frankly, standing in line for 6 hours because your general admission ticket didn’t guarantee a spot was tremendous fun - playing catch with my son, wandering off to get free food cooked by LSU tailgaters. Good times.

Like announcer said that game may as well have been in BR with the fan noise. That was a fun rewatch

Fun game in person, sitting somewhere in the right field bleachers. Couldn’t actually see Ray Wright’s catch as it was too far down in front of us.

Not much sleep but a ton of memories.

Actually, the Vulcan changeup is what their first pitcher, Jeremy Young, was throwing. He kept our guys off all game. I’m glad their coach, Mark Marques, made the pitching change when he did. We had no answer for Young, but we got to Wayne enough to get the W.

You’re right. I knew one of them had that grip. IIRC Roy Corcoran threw his change with that same V grip. That’s what his Juco coach told me at least.

Actually, this Vulcan grip is what Paul Skenes uses on his changeup. Pretty cool, since it's not widely used.

Remember that day well. Went bass fishing with my brother and a friend that morning in the spillway. Fishing sucked so we hauled arse home in time to catch the game.
