and this board has been very helpful.

Family of 6(45/45/20/18/15/11)

I have been all over the place idea wise...Banff, Yellowstone, Cascades, Moab, etc...

I have come to the conclusion to plan for one of those trips next year with more prep and this summer making a trip to the Colorado area.

We have never been to Colorado or the Rocky mountains.

Looking at a Monday -Saturday and trying to see RMNP and Pikes Peak/Garden of the Gods.

I have been looking in the Granby Lake area and then thought a few days at a Resort may be fun and give us some things to do with the trails/gondolas/alpine slides and such. I have found some good rates at Winter Park which looks like it fits in that loop as well as maybe Breckenridge?

Looking for suggestions. Will be flying in to Denver from New Orleans

We had a blast staying in Estes Park years ago.

Stayed at Pine Haven Resort. Quaint old cabins. Right near the entrance to the RMNP. FYI, there are a number of other rental units on Fall River Road.

Your kids would like Meow Wolf in Denver. Give yourself 2 extra hours before return flight to see it.

Estes Park and RMNP are great site seeing. A resort might be a better idea for the reasons you state, lifts, alpine slides, etc.

Winter Park has grown a lot since I've been there 15 yrs ago. I'm not sure if there is an alpine slide there. Lots of lakes and hiking close by and you can enter into the backside of RMNP and come out at Estes Park. There you can see the Stanley Hotel from The Shining. Maybe even stay a night there and tool around Estes the next day.

There some good places to eat, around WP I think one is on Grand Lake which is not far from WP.
Pikes Peak is fun to do and a little white knuckly to drive and I'm not sure how you get to it from WP area. I've only done it from Colo Springs.

White water rafting is a blast and you could do some trout fishing.

Looks like the Winter Park alpine slide will be down, but Breckenridge has one and looks like it could be a fun town to be able to go walk through at night and do some fun stuff?

It looks like we could land in Denver early Monday, spend 2 nights in Grand Lake area to be able to hit RMNP...not a whole lot available is Estes for our size.

From there three nights in Breckenride type area and then back through to Colorado Springs Saturday/Fly out late Saturday night.

Does this sould like it could give us a good taste of Colorado and the Rocky Mtns?

Try YMCA of the Rockies cabins, though you might not have much luck and I think there's a nightly minimum. Just got back from a two week trip in Colorado that included RMNP. If you have any questions, fire away

Breckenridge is as crowded in summer as winter. Great little town. What makes it different is it’s a real historic town. Not a created ski village town.

Acclimate well. Drink lots of water before going there so you don’t get altitude sickness. Peak is 13k base town is between 9k and 10k. One of highest Colorado places. Acclimation is real.

northeastiger is correct. Lots of water, because you don't sweat but you are losing moisture because it is evaporating immediately as you sweat. Drink drink drink water.
RMNP will be a good test and open your eyes to adjusting to the altitude. Don't plow ahead on hikes like you normally would, take your time. There is much less oxygen and you lose moisture super fast. Take your time and drink water constantly. You really don't get overheated because the sweat evaporating is keeping you cool. So you may not think you need water but you need it.
That trip sounds good to me. Breckenridge is a cool place too and more historic that WP. Maybe try to squeeze in white water rafting or see the continental divide.

ETA: Don't be a dumb@ss and try to get close to moose or elk for a picture. You'll see idiots pulled over climbing down to a pasture to get a close pic of a moose/elk.

I lived in Colorado for a decade. If I had a family trip I’d immediately leave Denver and stay in Boulder the first couple of nights. Go to Pearl Street Mall, Chautauqua, drive up Flagstaff, drive into the Canyon to see the Falls, eat a great meal. Kids can swim in Boulder Creek, street performers, farmers market, tea house, etc. Plus you can acclimate to the altitude a bit before going into the back country.

Then drive N to Estes Park and stay there. Then into RMNP and back through Granby and Grand Lake and back into Denver on 1-70. Then down to the Springs for GOTG and Pikes Peak and back up to Denver and back home.

Boulder looks like a fun town.

Am I too wishful with the following

Monday - arrive 10:00 and spend day around Boulder.
Stay in Boulder

Tuesday - Boulder in morning - Boulder to Nederland and up to Estes PArk for rest of day in RMNP.
Stay in Estes Park

Wednesday - RMNP and then travel to Breckenridge
Stay in Breckenridge

Thursday - Breckenridge to Idaho falls for 2 hour rafting trip.
Stay in Breckenridge

Friday - Hang around resort and do slides and local activities
Stay in Breckenridge

Saturday - Breckenridge to Garden of Gods and back to Denver - Fly out at 6:00

All that looks fun and doable.

I am guessing you meant Idaho Springs here. Do not do raft Clear Creek, it is next to I-70 and boring af. Go to raft the Arkansas in Buena Vista. You can do the Numbers if you want wild or Brown's Canyon if you want tame.

Moab UT is awesome. I just came from a trip Colorado -Utah. In Colorado I would spend some time in Vail and Breckenridge

There’s easily enough in and around RMNP to keep anyone busy for a month of hiking.

Would 2 days be enough time to get a good experience in the park?

Not huge hikers, but would like to drive around and get out and do some walking around...light trails.

Gf and I just spent Saturday-Monday (6/8-6/10) in Estes Park/Rocky Mountain. While you can easily spend a week in RMNP, we did enough in 2-3 days to satisfy us.

Get a reservation for Bear Lake Road and hike to Dream Lake, and Emerald Lake. Kids can do it. You will be glad you did. Absolutely stunning. There are several other trails/lakes you can hike to off of Bear Lake Road as well. I'd also do the Gem Lake hike which is really close to Estes. I've done it a few times including last week, and its a great, moderately easy trail. All the trails should be snow free and accessible by July.

I'd stick the west side of the park while y'all are staying in Estes, and save most of Trail Ridge Road and north and east side of the park for the day you drive to Breck or wherever you are going next.

If y'all aren't going to be hiking a whole lot, then 2 days is plenty to drive around and see all of the beauty. Just make sure you get the proper reservations. If the days/times you are looking at are all sold out, then get on the website at 7 pm sharp the day before and get them. They release 40% of the reservations then, and they sell out in minutes or less.

You don't need a res before 9 am and after 2 pm for trail ridge road but the lines to get in around those times swell up pretty bad. For Bear Lake Road, you don't need a res before 5 am and after 6 pm, so you'd definitely want to get reservations. If you get a reservation for Bear Lake Road, it includes access to Trail Ridge Road.

That looks pretty good except Saturday is not good. I wouldn't try to go from Breck to the Springs and back to DIA all before 6 pm. That's a lot of driving and a lot of traffic variables .I'd probably do the Springs on Friday and do both GOTG and then head over to Royal Gorge or Pikes Peak to cap the day off. And give yourself a more relaxed departure date.

So is it possible for us to not even be able to get into the park?
