The first three months of 2024 saw a continued drop in levels of violent crime and murder across the country, according to data released by the FBI on Monday -- a trend that Attorney General Merrick Garland called "historic." Reported incidents of violent crime dropped 15% between January and March of this year compared to the same period last year, according to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Data.

Murders dropped by more than 26% in the same time period, the data shows. The FBI has not released details about the number of incidents for the categories of crime. It will do so when 80% participation levels are met, the agency said.

Why are they releasing this if participation levels aren’t met? Just trying to pander for votes?

You have to charge to get crimes on the record. Not catch and release.

Another Hail Mary in an election year.

I literally wouldn't believe the FBI if we were standing at a window looking at a blue sky and they told me the sky is blue.

Not using statistics from large urban centers will give these outcomes

The danger of such long-term, sustained dishonesty is that folks will simply stop trusting/believing anything that comes out of the government. If folks really became skeptical during the Nixon years, that skepticism was tinged with at least a little bit of optimism.

I think that optimism is gone. Folks that buy these official stories - about anything - are either blind sheep or willing sheep.

People fought this data for years pre-Covid when it was clear violent crime was decreasing. They're just doubling down now because the data still doesn't conform to their preferred fear porn/emotional response.

We know violent crime was terrible form the mid-70s to the mid-90s, and then crashed over the next 25 years (even though people still try to argue this).

We know violent crime spiked with Covid and the riots in 2020 and kept going up through at least 2021 and some of 2022.

It appears that we're going back to a pre-2020 level of violent crime, which makes all the sense in the world when you look at it logically (and the effects of the Covid era keep decreasing).

When you a letting most get away with murder and it's not on the books it will surely bring the numbers down.

Reclassification of crimes in Chicago alone is enough to skew the numbers nationally.

No one is buying this crap. Especially the black communities.

Easy for it to drop when you aren’t reporting it or aren’t listening to reports sent in.

How do you reclassify a murder? Or a shooting?

LINK

quote:

The Chicago Police Department released its end of the year crime stats for 2023, showing a drop in in the number of murders and shootings.

CPD said there were 617 murders in Chicago last year, down from 709 in 2022.

quote:

The number of shootings is also down, with 2,452 shootings in 2023 and 2,829 shootings in 2022.

The number of shooting victims in 2023 was 2,883, down from 3,484 in 2022.

2021 had over 800.

Pre-Covid, 2019 had seen a continuation of the decrease we expected

quote:

The nation’s third-most populous city has recorded 490 murders in 2019 as of Tuesday morning, Chicago police say – about 13% lower than 2018’s total of 564.

Why isn't it logical to assume that muders won't get close to those 2018 or 2019 numbers, as we get further away from the impacts of Covid-era policy?

Someone posted two graphs last week where the "good" numbers were because only 90 of 264 cities were reported (as opposed to like 215 of 264 in the "bad" numbers).

If it’s true then it’s because of Trump. If it’s false then it’s because of Biden

There is an open air "fence" in San Francisco that runs unabated.

Thats how you lower the crime stats. You stop prosecuting shite.
