Setting up a family trip to Big Sky Montana for a family of 8.

We are debating all the possibilities so in could be a resort of some kind, AirBNB or whatever.

The trip is going to be towards the end of December for 4-6 days depending on the day we decide to leave and need to return for work.

I know other than the location this is fairly vague, but we are open to lots of ideas so any information is appreciated.
We aren't going to be "overly" active would like a nice place with things to do locally where we stay is the goal.
We will have 2 parents over 70 with us, 4 of us in our 40's, and 2 teenagers.

Not all of us will ski, but a few of us might take a couple afternoons and hit a few "mild" slopes somewhere.

We will definitely have at least one rental vehicle probably a bigger SUV to get around.

Thanks for any suggestions if you have any.

If the primary reason to go isn't to ski and you aren't going to be overly active, there isn't a lot to do in Big Sky itself. Have you looked at Bozeman and the folks hitting the mild slopes skiing at Bridger Bowl or traveling down to Big Sky to ski? There is more to do in Bozeman for those that aren't active and it's closer to Mammoth should you decide to drive into Yellowstone.

Great suggestion and thank you.
Is Yellowstone a place to visit even in the winter?

The Northern part of the park is open to car travel year round. Other parts of the park can be visited on snowmobile or snow-coach going through a vendor. If you stay in Big Sky and want to visit the park, it would be more convenient to book through a company in West Yellowstone to take you via snow coach or snowmobile. If you stay in Bozeman you can actually drive into the park yourself (about 1.5 hours away) at Mammoth.

Also, as far as rental cars go I've always had good luck in Bozeman with Turo. Turo has always been cheaper and had a better selection of 4x4 vehicles at BZN than traditional rental car companies.

Is there a reason you are going to Big Sky? Big sky is a huge ski mountain (one of the largest in the world by area) but Montana in December is usually absolutely brutally cold. There’s not going to be a lot to do outside of ski and winter activities like snowmobile, cross country ski, etc.

I’m not trying to be obtuse or rude, I’m just trying to help you out. I’m not saying only the hardcore need to go there, that’s not the case at all either. But you go to big sky to ski, and ski hard. It’s not like Colorado where there’s a bunch of other things to do or just have photo ops and be seen.

It is beautiful and certainly you can relax with a hot tub and the snow and just enjoy some winter wonderland. But just know there’s decent chance of being snowed in with negative temps outside.

Given that, I’d look for a home rental with a hot tub and a great view that’s not necessarily great ski access as that won’t matter.

I appreciate your thoughts on this.

We are still in the planning stage and still open to ideas.
We certainly want to be out west somewhere probably somewhere with a more temperate climate with my parents being elderly and not as active.

Look into steamboat Colorado for a lower elevation mountain town with more going on.

We stayed at Montage in Big Sky last November. As mentioned, there isn’t a lot to do besides skiing. Downtown Big Sky has a few cool shops and restaurants, but you can see all of it in a matter of an hour and a half. They have complimentary Cadillac Escalades to use for a certain time limit. We rented a Tahoe to go into Bozeman for a day and hired 406 Shuttle to take us to Yellowstone. Highly recommend 406, Matt really made our trip. He also has larger vehicles that could accommodate your family. Gallatin River guides were one of the best fishing outfits I have ever used. There are also a few hiking trails around Montage you could easily drive to. If I had to do it over again, I would stay in Bozeman. Beautiful country out that way.
