Our golden retriever puppy (13 months old) is on his second ear infection. I know the breed can have ear infection issues, anyone have any at home preventive care that keeps going to the vet every so often?

I had one who would get an ear infection at this time every year.

They have a drying lotion you can use to help keep it in check.

Our lab has a problem with this too. Always the left ear. She will get it after swimming/retrieving. We use long ear swabs to clean her ears. We also use a cleaner from Chewie. Don’t remember the name. A prescription med we have used on an infection is called Sureolan Otic suspension.

She is 6. Loves to rub and scratch her head in the gravel and grass. Hard to stop that. Good luck.

Google “the purple stuff”, it’s a combination of hydrogen peroxide and gentinviolet and said to work wonders cheaply.

Interesting you say that, sample of only 2, but both were the right ear and when playing rough, he's generally more sensitive in his right ear.

Yep. She will just scratch the living tar outta her ears but 90% of the time it’s her left that gets it. And she loves the water. Hard to keep her out at times.

Are you feeding chicken? My dogs would get yeast in ears and somehow I linked it to foods with chicken. Switched to salmon and no more problems.

peroxide? You might even put a small dab of antibiotic ointment in there sometimes.

I have a 4 yr old lab and have dealt with it her whole life. Seems to somewhat have grown out of it.

I used to think it was water related but she’s had them without being in any water for a month or so. I still always try to rise her ears after she swims. Usually the left ear. I tend to think it may have something to do environmentally like allergies, seems to get them more often in the spring.

Have a buddy that’s a vet I got to give me an extra bottle of mometamex antibiotic so I at least don’t have to pay for a vet visit when she gets one. It usually knocks it out after a couple of days.

In a squirt bottle mix 1 part alcohol, 1 part water, 1part vinegar.

When you get home from the pup swimming squirt some of it in its ear and rub it good.

Vet gave us that recipe.

It's not a home remedy but I use epiotic on my labs. It was recommended by my vet years ago. Got into a routine of flushing once every week. Evey once and awhile they will get yeast but no bacteria.

Melt coconut oil in a jar by running warm water over the jar. Add in a few drops of tea tree oil. Squirt a little in each ear once every six months.

Fixed my bulldog

My dogs frequent ear infections turned out to be allergies. I had to swap his food to a low ingredient food and they stopped. Vet recommended Natural Balance, it's expensive, but no more vet trips and stinky ear meds for 10 days.

The chicken in the dog food was causing mine to have yeasty ears too. I have a Goldendoodle now but I had a lab mix years ago that would get nasty ears from chicken based foods so I always fed the Goldendoodle beef based foods. She would go to boarding and come back with stinky, itchy ears so I asked them and they told me they use chicken based food. Now I supply a beef based food when she goes and no more yeast in her ears.

EpiOtic Advanced on Amazon

This is a great product. Always clean after swimming and maybe 1-2 times weekly as needed.
