The Cars Appreciation Thread

The Cars released their self-titled debut album today in 1978. It was one of the best-selling albums of the 1970s, and it is considered one of the best albums in rock history.
Brilliant debut album. With songs like
"Just What I Needed", "My Best Friend's Girl", and "Good Times Roll", as well as other radio and film hits such as "Bye Bye Love" and "Moving in Stereo".
Looking at the debut album got me doing a deep dive into all their material and man they are a phenomenal band. I was too young to appreciate their debut at the time. But later I remember my brother playing the 1984 Album HeartBeat City. And I vividly remember watching this video on MTV.
Fun Fact- The band won Video of the Year for "You Might Think" at the first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984.
I appreciate them more now than I ever did. Looking back at all their songs and realizing how many I loved.

I love the Cars. Candy-O is my favorite of theirs.

I always liked them. I saw them in I think 1986 outside of Chicago at a venue called Poplar Creek.
They were really good.

As someone who grew up on early 70s rock (Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, etc) I kind of overlooked The Cars when they were putting out their music.
I’ve just started really listening to them and they rocked. Great tunes. Really enjoy “Drive” and “Just what I needed “

I like The Cars, but I don't think I need to hear any of their big hits ever again..

Elliot Easton is often overlooked. Dude is a great guitarist and always plays for the song.

I was coming to post this but you beat me to it. He probably won’t make too many “top” lists but he provided some fantastic guitar work…and as you correctly note, he did not try to overshadow the songs.
I recently noticed that I enjoy the songs that Benjamin Orr sings much more that the ones that Ric O sings. I guess it’s just personal presence but the Orr songs just seem a lot better as a whole

They were supposed to be incredible live

Probably the best American band of their time.

I’ve really been getting into The Cars and The Cure this year thanks to a few threads on here. Man, I grew up in the wrong decade.

As a 12 year old boy Candy O’s album cover always caught my eye in the record store.
Love the band!

I post this in almost every Cars thread.
Best unreleased Cars song in my opinion. Strawberry Moonlight.
Love that Easton solo:

As a Gen Xer who was 12 years old in the summer of 1984, I wore out a mixtape with this song on it. Generally speaking, I don’t think I ever heard a song by The Cars that I didn’t really like. I wish I could’ve seen them live.

Elliot Easton might be the best guitarist from a non-guitar-heavy band.
Dude can really play, but because The Cars were also very keyboard heavy, his playing is often overlooked.
Great band.
