Advice for Attending the U.S. Open? First Time at a PGA Event

I’ve never attended a PGA event before - any recommendations from the veterans?
Also any recs for the surrounding areas? Pinehurst and Southern Pines have the best reviews overall.

Spend a fair amount of time at the range. You can order most of the U.S. Open merch online so I wouldn't waste much time in the merch tent.

In general, they want you to be loose and casual. Drinking constantly can help loosen you up a bit. Players execute better when you yell their name, and especially IF you let a “bah bah booey” or a “mashed potatoes” go right after contact.
IF you see people in blue coats or with armbands, they are basically waiters and will bring you drinks.
It may not be the Waste Management or The Masters, but the crowd should be pretty wild. Drink up and party! And smoke stogies like 3 at a time. If you are not removed from the grounds or at least need attention at the medical tent, you are doing it wrong.

US Open Info - Local Paper
This is a little busy with ads but has a lot of good information on the US Open from a local perspective.
Not sure where ya'll are staying or how long you will be in town but will do my best to make recommendations if you have questions on dining etc.

I was at Oakmont for the final round in 2016. Here are my tips:
Buy your merch as soon as you check in and take advantage of the shipping to your house thing. The lines get longer as the day goes on.
Stay until they throw you out. My buddy and I got to walk on the fairways and greens and even stopped down into the church pew bunkers on the way out.
Walk the course early. You’ll be too tired later. Then decide who you really want to see and where. Get a couple of holes ahead of them so you can get close to a tee or green.
Spend a little time near the clubhouse. Theres usually VIP sections around there with great people watching/celebrity sightings

I will only add-bring a pair of binoculars.

I was there for the final round also. Oakmont is a beast! I was in the stands behind the green on 18 when DJ flushed it to 4 feet. Saw the trophy presentation and all. To the OP, get your swag early then try and walk the course before It gets too hot.

Coming from Charlotte, is it better to take 74 bypass (tolls) and 74, or go with hwy 27? Not worried about a few dollars in tolls, curious about traffic, shuttle wait time, etc.

From Charlotte Douglas I would probably take 74 bypass and 74 toward Rockingham and follow signs to first parking. Previous Open's had very short wait times/plenty of shuttles and I did not hear of any lots that had longer wait times. I have seen tons of busses coming in over the past few days.

What hole is a good place to hang out at to watch a few groups come through? Looking to post up between the green of a par 4/5 and tee box of a short par 3 (with the par three green still in sight line).

Grandstand on the tee box of hole 6 is one place. Depending on where you sit in the grandstand, you have a view of tee box 6 and 4 and a view of the 3rd and 5th greens. I try and end up in the grandstands at the 16th green on the weekend but need to get there fairly early in the day. The hole location on Sunday makes the long iron approach shots pretty brutal. From what i remember facing the grandstand, seats at the tops left can see the entire par 3 17th and the tee of 18. It makes it easier to follow the last group in along with everyone else on the course!

Driving Range will be the best spot to watch these guys hit more than just a single shot. The 3-4-5-6 intersection is a good spot to catch action. On the back 13/14/15/ middle of 10 is another good intersection to catch action too.
Drum & Quill after the round. Great place to catch beers and full of history. Pinehurst Brew Co is a legit spot as well, pretty good BBQ & beers.
Southern Pines: around the park downtown there are a lot of spots to hang out. Along broad street/tracks and the train station.
ETA: golf pride has a custom grip lab in town. I highly recommend it as they could have some pros in/out during the week.
