A Bridge Too Far
Saving Private Ryan

Both to me are great for different reasons. ABTF had a crazy good cast, studded with names everyone recognizes today. There are others but I'm drawing blanks.

It's a really hard question because of the million different ways to look at the war.

Best battle movie? Best movie talking about the Holocaust? Civilian suffering in Asia? Civilian/non-"undesirable" experience in Europe? Resistance movements? Love stories with the war in the background? Movies told from the bad guy point of view? Movies about the homefront?

Hard to say which is the best.

I’m not sure if Schindler’s List counts, but high up there. Others:

The Bridge on the River Kwai
Inglourious Basterds
Saving Private Ryan
Downfall
Grave of the Fireflies
Hacksaw Ridge
Jojo Rabbit
Oppenheimer (not sure it counts either)

this will probably be an unpopular opinion, but i cant think of a single WWII movie that i like enough to consider a truly great AND rewatchable movie. Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, and a few others really are great movies, but i cant say that i really ever think "man i havent watched Schindler's List in a long time, i'm due a rewatch!" maybe Inglorious Basterds falls into that category, but i'm not sure if it counts as a real WWII movie.

i find the Vietnam movies like Platoon and FMJ along with some of the Gulf War -> GWOT movies way more rewatchable.

Any WWII POW film fills that requirement for me. Bridge on the River Kai, The Great Escape, King Rat, Stalag 17, even Victory is on my rewatch list.

that's fair.

i will add now what i KNOW will be an unpopular opinion, and that's that one of the most rewatchable to me is actually Pearl Harbor. i know the plot is ludicrous, i know the history is extremely shaky (at best), but i just cant help myself. i like the over the top Michael Bay cinematography and unashamedly patriotic message, i like the non combat scenes with the different pilots, i even like Alec fricking Baldwin in that movie. plus it was peak Kate Beckinsale. it's a real guilty pleasure situation.

Civilian suffering in Asia?

The Japanese atrocities in China are probably the least covered topic. It'd be interesting to see a well-made movie centered around those events.

That being said...

My personal favorite is probably Midway - the version made in 1976. Is it the best WWII movie? No... but it was among the first I ever saw and led to my deep fascination with that specific battle.

That it told the Japanese side (to an extent) was very different.

Plus the cast is absurd:

Charleton Heston
Henry Fonda
James Coburn
Glenn Ford
Toshirô Mifune (of Seven Samurai fame)
Robert Mitchum
Robert Wagner
Pat Morita
Tom Selleck
Erik Estrada
Dabney Coleman

Sands of Iwo Jima is my personal choice for best WWII movie since it borrowed heavily from the Marine Corps documentary “With the Marines at Tarawa.” My grandfather is in the film for a few seconds but there are plenty of other actual marines in the film.

Tora Tora Tora would be my second choice since it chronicled the buildup to Pearl Harbor.

My personal favorite is Twelve O’clock High. But Patton and Saving Private Ryan are also up there.

Saving Private Ryan is a really good one.

My two favorites though are
Midway (Heston version), even though I hate the stupid sub-plot of the romance between his son and the Jap gal. I like how it shows the story from both sides, and also shows how the battle was a game of inches and last minute decisions that decided it.

The Longest Day. Again, it shows all sides of the battle and has such a stellar cast.

no one had ever seen the way Saving Private Ryan portrayed the d day invasion and the sheer horror it must have been for those landing that day
I have never been in a movie that was so silent at the end
