Does it really make a difference in your travel experience?

Yes, in larger airports, the Pre-check security line is much shorter, which can save your arse sometimes.
Not having to take your laptop out or shoes off is nice.
ETA: If you have TWIC, you have a KTN. Don’t pay twice!

It did when I was flying out of IAH regularly. Smaller airports, not really.

Yes.
Especially at some airports.
Orlando for example seems to be a disaster almost always.
If you have twic you can use that as pre check, if you put your id number from card when reserve ticket.

Depends on the airport.
My recent travels have found that the normal security lines have become very inconsistent in what protocols you need to follow. Some no longer require laptops out, some do. Some no longer require toiletries out, some do. Some don’t make you take your shoes off, some do. Etc.
This just makes everything take longer because nobody knows the rules anymore. Add to that the navy seal wanna be agent yelling at you to not do something that the airport you just came from required it gives me the red arse.

I travel for work and take over 150 flights a year, so it definitely makes a huge difference for me. I got it for my wife as well so when we travel together we can go straight through security.
Not having to take off my shoes, jacket, belt, and not taking my laptop, ipad, etc. out of my bag becomes a big deal when you do it several times per week. Obviously, the short lines and going through quickly helps as well.
I'm 1K with United so I also get free Clear membership which sometimes speeds things up even a little bit more...

So what exactly does the precheck entail? Is it just tilling out paperwork ahead of time? Is there some additional screening that goes on ahead of time to flag you as safe?

Just fill out some forms online and go get your fingerprints taken somewhere local. It also costs about $80 I think. Something like that. It lasts for 5 years. It's relatively easy as long as you don't mind being fingerprinted.

If you truly enjoy standing in super long lines at airport TSA security checkpoints, then no it does not make a difference

I had to fill out the online form, pay the processing fee then go to an appointment at on Office Depot building off I45 in Houston.

Definitely makes it faster getting through security. I fly out of Houston and for a few flights I had TSA pre check and my wife did not. I would get through security and then wait 20-30 minutes for her. Of course I would get an ear full about her getting TSA pre check so now she has it.

What does having finger prints on file have to do with having no need to remove belt, shoes, laptop, etc.? Kind of seems like it's just a money making scheme that does nothing to ensure the same level of "safety".

It’s worth the money because when you do need it, it’s totally worth it.
Atlanta has its own security checkpoint for TSA pre check. Lines are long but they move. Last time I went through it took me about 30 mins to get thru. Contrast with another guy that was attending the conference we were at took almost 2 hrs to get thru the normal checkpoint.
Wife and I went thru Orlando last year in relatively short duration as opposed to the waits for the normal checkpoint.

It is hit or miss depending on the airport , but better to have it in my opinion. At worst, it has taken the same amount of time as the regular TSA line would but that’s only been 1-2x. At best, I’ve walked right through Pre in no time. Not having to deal with shoes and laptop alone make it worth it.

As someone who has TSA pre-check and really likes the short lines and express pass through, I encourage no one else to sign up for it.
