He's real experienced, and knows what he's doing so he'd be an upgrade...but I firmly believe Patterson is the driving force. Here are TCU's scoring defense rankings, and they were good before Bumpas:
1999 15th
2000 1st
2001 45th
2002 19th
2003 29th
2004 103rd (bumpas' first year as DC)
2005 15th (assuming patterson said, I'll take it from here)
2006 3rd
2007 10th
1999 15th
2000 1st
2001 45th
2002 19th
2003 29th
2004 103rd (bumpas' first year as DC)
2005 15th (assuming patterson said, I'll take it from here)
2006 3rd
2007 10th

How isn't Patterson in a real conference yet?

I'd give that guy a job in a heartbeat. When Miles was in limbo last year I didn't even really consider him, but after looking into him further and seeing past history of defense and winning...he'd be near the top of any list I made.

It's Gary Patterson the Head Coach who is the defensive mind for them. Bumpas is the DC but it is Patterson that gets it done.

Patterson run's the entire d. D.B., gets the call from patterson and signal's the play in. Not sure you want a guy like that.
Saban did let Muschamp call the defense and scheme. He would let muschamp know if he made the wrong call, too.

When Nick was here everybody said it was Nick and nothing about Muschamp - but look what he has gone on to do without Nick.

The difference is Muschamp was an up and coming coach who took the job with Saban to learn all he could from him. Muschamp has taken that knowledge along with what he learned from Tubby and moved on.
Bumpas has bounced around mid-majors his entire career. The old dog that can't learn new tricks.

You do realize Bumpas has been a coach for 30 years and played in the SEC!
Sorry to be persnickety but I think he played at Arkansas before they were members of the SEC.

TCU's defense was relentless, took some chances and did it with CLASS! Sign Bumpas up: he sold me!

You didn't read any other post in this thread did you.

I sure did but I didn't think they knew any more than I did!

dick bumpas. yeh hes good but Patterson gets the credit for the defense thou. Its kinda like the Saban/Polini thing. Saban created the tough defense LSU has had over the years...but Bo just ran it.

Yep, I saw that, UT gave up 387 passing yards to OU, which, thankfully, Colt and co. on the O managed to overcome.
Errr, I forgot how much Muschamp's D gave up to TT, what with that last second TD play by TT 'n all. That was some great defense, eh? All you had to do was keep TT out of the end zone and his D couldn't manage it even with double coverage.
Enough of that though ... MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I like their defense, I just do not know who we would be really hiring.
I have not gotten any play on the name I like, but mark this name down.....
Greg Hudson.
LINK
We may be saying, wish we would have tried to get him when.....
After reading "resumes" of a few posted here, I watched his D take down the second most productive passing O in the country, so I looked to see who was in charge...
found him. I would have tried to interview him immediately, specially looking at OUR specific needs and his background.
after 35 years of reading resumes and evaluating employees, his resume and energy just read as a good match to me.

In evaluating DC's we probably need to be careful about taking their worst performance and assuming that's characteristic of their ability. Heck we hung 350+ yds on Auburn in '07 in the 2nd half alone and that's not even counting LaFell's "should'vebeenacatchandTDbutwasanIntinstead".
In Muschamp's defense, UT had two people in position to make the game ending tackle against TT - looked like they both said "your's". His defenses also held UF to 17 pts and Arkansas to 7 pts in '07.
I'd be pleased if he was our new DC.

im sorry. patterson brought the 4-2-5 to tcu, not bumpas. espn even talked about it before the bowl game. when they mentioned the defense, bumpas' name was not even said once. it was all patterson

I think gary patterson does a great job coaching that D.
TCU's DC is about as important as OC at UF or DC at Bama.
